Free Music Notes for The Life Pursuit AlbumFree Music Review: When will they disappoint? Hit: 5 StarsAfter the magnificent and rejuvenating reinvention that was 2004's "Dear Catastrophe Waitress", Belle & Sebastian follow that album up with an equally beautiful and rocking record in "The Life Pursuit". Storm your record shops and get ready to purchase multiple formats, because this is an investment you won't regret.
Lately, it seems the band has continually had their hand in the "past" pot while moving forward simultaneously. Taking hints from both their own past and old school pop, "The Life Pursuit" is undoubtedly refreshing and sublime. When the band wants to rock, they rock ("White Collar Boy"), and when they swim in their painted seas of perfect pop ("The Blues Are Still Blue"), they do that equally well too. Few bands can evoke the same imagery and feelings with both electric anthems and piano ballads as skillfully as B&S. And their underrated and unpretentious nature has always made them one of the most cherished "indie" (can we still call them that?) bands around.
But it's clear that this isn't entirely the same band to the public. The infectious first single, "Funny Little Frog", is their highest charting of their career, showing their late (by some standards) popularity might signify them selling out. But this is simply not true, because the vocals and songwriting have never weakened, even when the production is more fleshed out. Sure, Belle and Sebastian haven't and might never make that "definitive" mainstream record that the media so eagerly wants them to (leave that to by-the-numbers rockers like Arctic Monkeys), but their consistency has always been what makes them so detached from the hype and other music business crap.
So, scenesters will foolishly call this "the soundtrack to their life", old geeky elitists will call it a sell out, but the rest of us will appreciate the music of a band in a stride that seems so far from ending.
