Free Music Notes for Ben Folds Five

Free Music Review: A bitchin' cd for new and old Folds fans... I like it anyway
Hit: 5 Stars

After pretty much wearing the bottom off my "Whatever and Ever Amen" cd, I started looking around for another Ben Folds Five cd to keep me busy (this was before Reinhold came out... personally I don't like that cd at all, with exception to Don't Change Your Plans, but that's a different review altogether)... Anyway, I did some online scouting and came up with this self-titled cd. I knew no songs on it AT ALL... But still, I picked up a copy, figuring that BF5 couldn't make a bad cd (once again, Reinhold...). Well, not only wasn't it a bad cd, it soon replaced "Whatever..." as my favorite cd. I'd personally like to take an opportunity to thank the band for keeping me happy for a couple years... And also, I'd like to reccomend every track, really, although "Video", "The Last Polka", and "Where's Summer B?" are my personal favorites of today... If you've never heard Ben Folds Five before, or if you are an old diehard who happened to miss their first cd, I suggest you purchase a copy!

Free Music Review: Sissy group that will kick your A**!
Hit: 5 Stars

The first song I heard off this record was "Underground." It struck me as cool because I am in a piano driven band myself, but the radio station didn't say the name of the band I was hearing. Then, a teacher at my old high school handed me a taped copy of "Ben Folds Five" after hearing my band play at an assembly. It blew me away. The way the band mixes "sissy" harmonies with fuzz bass, drums, and jazz/rock incensed piano was unlike anything I had ever heard. You have to pick this one up. The topics range from long-winded relatives ("Uncle Walter") to domestic problems ("The Last Polka") to a satirical take on the "alternative/industrial" scene.("Underground") "Philosophy" stands out due to the Gershwin-influenced solo at the climax and "Alice Childress" is just beautiful. Needless to say, when my band plays, we almost always throw some BFF in the set. Bottom line: get it. Oh, and get the next two as well.

Free Music Review: Classic Ben Folds.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is about as punk rock of an album as you can make without a Guitar in sight. But then again, there are touches of Ben Folds' sweet sorrowful side too, which makes it a little less punk.

Standout tracks include Underground, Philosophy, and Boxing, though all of the tracks have a potential difference to them. Underground starts with fantastic and humorous intro, then kicks into some friendly, happy keyboarding...

Boxing is a sorrowful tale of a man at the end of his career, looking back on whether or not he's proud of himself or not. It's a touching and bittersweet tale and shows a little of Ben Folds' great story telling ability.

Overall, Ben Folds is an AMAZING piano player (and completely nuts live). The songs transcend "piano music" and this album has a fun, youthful tone to it, which seems to be a rarity in "piano music" as well.

If you're a little bit alternative, then this is a must own album.

Free Music Review: The Ultimate Feel-Good Album
Hit: 5 Stars

Ben Folds is an extremely gifted piano-player and songwriter. His talent shines through on tracks like 'Philosophy' and 'Alice Childress', which can be compared with the best that Billy Joel ever wrote. It's probably doing the band a disservice just comparing them to Billy Joel, though, as their music also has elements of feel-good college rock bands such as The Lemonheads and Weezer. After listening to this album hundreds of times I can safely say that it's my favourite all-time album - everyone should have a copy! It's guarranteed to make you feel good no matter what mood you are in. I've seen the band play live twice and was just amazed at their performance. They're three talented musicians who deserve to go far. Their subsequent albums have become more experimental and low-key and, whilst the quality of the songwriting is kept high, they'll probably never top the breathtaking effort that is their debut album. Buy it now!
