Free Music Notes for Ben Folds Five

Free Music Review: Something for everyone (with taste)
Hit: 5 Stars

I love all sorts of music-- from Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx, to Dave Matthews and Jon Mayer, to Sum 41 and Queens of the Stone Age, to Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, to Fatboy Slim and DJ Shadow, to Ella Fitzgearld and Norah Jones, to Frank Sinatra, The Beatles and beyond. But this is my favorite. Of EVERYTHING. In the whole world. Ben Folds Five was an amazing band, and to this day I internally weep at the fact that they are no longer together, because though Folds himself is a fabulous solo performer, the music is always stronger when performed with all the instruments intended to be used in the songs. But if you are only going to buy one Ben Folds or BFF cd, this should be it. It makes you smile, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you think. But most of all, it makes you happy-- to know that in this day and age musical prodigies do still exist.

Free Music Review: Instantly enjoyable music with an actual shelf life. Really.
Hit: 5 Stars

My introduction to Ben Folds Five was a surprising one, to say the least. I was napping on the sofa one afternoon in late 1996 and someone decided it'd be funny to wake me by blasting the opening strains of "Julianne" on the stereo. Imagine being jolted out of sleep by a loud, nerdy twang bellowing "I met this girl, she looked like Axl Rose..." Half a decade after the fact, the delightful weirdness of Ben Folds Five is no less refreshing, and this album is the most dynamic, colourful example of the now-defunct trio. Folds shared with Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee a chemistry unmatched in the grossly-underappreciated genre of "absurdist jazz that calls itself punk". Buy this eponymous release, learn the bright harmony vocals, and engage in a little therapeutic "air piano" while you wait at red lights.

Free Music Review: Damn!
Hit: 5 Stars

Ben Folds can write a rockin' pop tune. One after another. This record straight-up rocks. I can't imagine how anyone could not like this music.

Look, I like all kinds of music. I listen to a lot of jazz and twentieth century classical music. I listen to a lot of avant garde and avant-rock (big Mr. Bungle fan and all that entails). However, that does not mean that I have my head up my ass. I recognize a perfect pop song when I hear one. "Jackson Cannery," "Philosophy," "Alice Childress," "Underground," "Uncle Walter," "Julianne," "Sports and Wine," are just a few examples of Ben Folds' uncanny ability to craft one perfect hook after another.

The band is tight and Robert Sledge's bass tones are fantastic. He adds so much with just a subtle change of timbre. Do yourself a favor and buy a real rock record.

Free Music Review: Anything But Brick
Hit: 5 Stars

For all you people who say and think that Brick is BFF's best song you're all sadly mistaken and STUPID AS HELL!!!

While perhaps a great song in concept, the fact that it is their only mainstream hit and was overplayed to DEATH leads me to believe anyone who says its their best has ONLY HEARD THAT SONG! Ben is one of the single greatest song writers in pop music history and if you want to hear some of his best check out the list below:

1 - philosophy
2 - selfless cold and composed
3 - don't change your plans
4 - best imitation of myself
5 - gone
6 - missing the war
7 - fred jones part 2
8 - the last polka
9 - emaline
10 - evaporated
11 - you to thank

thats just a small hint of how many songs that are BETTER than brick.

Free Music Review: Genius. Absolute Genius.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the salvation of pop. Labeled as "punk rock for sissies" by lead vocalist Ben folds. Ben Folds Five debuted with this self-titled masterpiece. Their music has changed slightly with time, and this album is the most energetic and lively of the albums. With no guitar, BFF has changed the way piano is looked at in the music industry. Charged with emotion, Ben Folds lays out the most beautiful melodies that accentuate his lyrics, not detract from them. Other members Darren Jessee and Robert Sledge put in their own 2 cents worth in the classic "Underground" and back up Ben on drums and bass very fittingly. BFF has evolved since this album whether for the better or worse i will not judge, but with strong roots like this album you can see the stardom BFF is destined for.
