Free Music Notes for Ben Folds FiveFree Music Review: Ben Folds' Best Hit: 5 Stars
Not only will I say that this is the best of Ben Folds or Ben Folds Five, it's the best of all the albums I own or have heard. It's certainly my favorite. The songs are really catchy but not in that "I want to die because I can't get this song out of my head" sort of way. Sometimes I have to restrain myself to keep from singing along at the top of my lungs (not a pretty thing to hear). And when I play it in the car, people on the road probably think I'm crazy. You can't help but get into it.But you may have to give it a chance. I didn't care for it too much at first and thought it was inferior to Whatever and Ever Amen. But before I knew it I couldn't stop playing it, and it soon became my favorite album. Video is probably the best track and is reason enough to get the album.
Free Music Review: Ben's best Hit: 5 Stars
I have everything Ben has ever done since this album (with the 5, by himself, with the Bens, etc.). This is still my favorite collection of Ben Folds tunes ever. Of course I will always have a place in my heart for Whatever and Ever Amen (I listened to it literally 1000's of times after it was released!) but this is the disc I can go back to and listen to all the way through any time (Whatever and Ever has some definite slow sections). This first eponymous CD is filled with great songs...every single one a "keeper." "Jackson Cannery", "Philosophy," "Boxing," "Uncle Walter," "Underground"...great songs to drive around in your car and rock out to. These guys were so good...I like Ben's solo work, of course, but the Ben Folds Five were the greatest.
Free Music Review: Best Ben Folds Ever Hit: 5 Stars
This is my favorite Ben Folds CD. I have several others (Whatever and Ever Amen, Rockin the Suburbs, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, Songs for Silverman) but this one is definitely my favorite. From the very beginning of the first track, Jackson Cannery, through Philosophy, and Best Imitation of Myself, all the way through the beautiful, piano-centered Boxing that ends the CD, the songs are packed with energy and the fantastic lyrics you expect from Ben. One of my favorite things is that this CD is cleaner than any of the other Ben Folds CDs I have both language-wise and topic-wise. I think many of these songs, including Philosophy and Best Imitation of Myself are among some of the best Ben Folds songs out there.
Free Music Review: An Impressive Pop Album Hit: 5 Stars
I didn't think much of Ben Folds Five before this. All I had heard was the radio-friendly Brick, and I suppose it was a good enough song. But I had always thought it was just another mainstream pop band. But my friend was really into Ben Folds Five. Everyday after school ,he would pop in Ben Folds Five - the self-titled album in his car CD player and play it over and over again. After a while, I began to really appreciate Ben Folds Five for its musical value. Ben Folds Five are indeed really good musicians. Their catchy self-titled debut is indeed one of the lesser known gems of pop music. Ben Folds Five is an incredible band. I recommend this CD to everyone. And for those skeptical, trust me...it will grow on you.
Free Music Review: A GREAT BEGINNING TO A GREAT BAND Hit: 5 Stars
IT'S REALLY SAD THAT NONE OF THESE SONGS HAVE NEVER BEEN PLAYED ON MAINSTREAM RADIO. I CONSIDER ALL OF THESE SONGS TO BE "RADIO-FRIENDLY". AMONG MY PERSONAL FAVES INCLUDE "BEST IMITATION OF MYSELF", "THE LAST POLKA", AND "JACKSON CANNERY". "UNDERGROUND" IS ALSO A FAVORITE ALTHOUGH THE LIVE RECORDING ON THEIR "NAKED BABY PHOTOS" IS FAR SUPERIOR IN COMPARISON, I'M SURE YOU'D AGREE. THIS GROUP MAKES THE PIANO COOL AGAIN AND BRINGS IT UP SCALE AS A TRUE ROCK INSTRUMENT. SMART, EMOTIONAL, AND SOMETIMES A LITTLE CRAZY; BEN FOLDS FIVE IS A BAND THAT SHOULD BE ON THE RADIO CONSTANTLY, INSTEAD OF A LOT OF THE TRASH THAT IS BEING PLAYED NOWADAYS.
