Free Music Review: Flying Solo - No Problem for Ben Folds
Hit: 5 Stars

Many fans wondered what the split of Ben Folds Five would do to piano rock's future. These fans do not have to worry because Ben Folds is still rockin' on and with marvelous style. Ben Folds delivers classic Ben Folds Five songs as well as some of his solo works in this live CD. He also introduces some new songs such as "Silver Street" and "One Down" which are both wonderful. His rendition of "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John is remarkable and very likely the best version I've ever heard.

To fill the places of previous band members, Ben Folds splits up the audience and asks them to sing the parts of the trumpet/sax/etc. Although most audiences couldn't perform such a task, Ben Folds fans are definitely the exception. Ben Folds also discusses some of the history behind his songs such as "Brick" and "You Were Not the Same." Ben Folds has a limitless talent, and I expect for him to keep making wonderful CDs like this one.

Free Music Review: Ben Goes Live!
Hit: 5 Stars

Take away all the fancy lights...Take away the expensive pyrotechnics...Take away the drums and guitars...And you are left with one stage...one piano...one man.
That is Ben Folds Live.
A personal encounter with one of the best and most creative pianists today, and his sold-out crowd of adoring fans.
This career-spanning live album depicts well how one of Folds' shows are played out. How he uses his fans to make up for his lack of musical accompaniment. Transforming them into a beautiful harmony or even a saxophone or trumpet section. For those who have not attended a Ben Folds' concert, this includes a DVD that depicts the best of his performances on the tour. Also including many funny stories, an Elton John impression, and the traditional stool throw. The quality of CD and the DVD are amazing. For those who are Ben Folds' fans this is a must, for those who are not this is where you start.

Free Music Review: Ben Folds Plays Mad Beefy
Hit: 5 Stars

Any Ben Folds fan will appreciate this album as it really showcases his piano talent in a way that the normal albums with full instrumentation do not. For those who don't know, this album consists of recordings from his recent solo tour called "Ben Folds and a Piano." I'm a pianist which is one of the reasons I'm so excited about this album, another is that I was at the Chicago show which has a track on this album and two tracks on the included DVD. One of the best things about this album is being able to clearly hear his playing on the lower register of the piano, which really defines a lot of his style. The only bad thing I have to say about Ben is that sometimes he swears so gratuitously that it loses it's "flava" if you know what I mean, which is the case on the last track of the DVD. Aside from that, the album is great and the 35 minute DVD is a good extra.

Free Music Review: Excellent Overview
Hit: 5 Stars

Number one - this is a great value! The combination of teems of tracks and a DVD really amounts to more music for your money.

Beyond that, even if this set had half as much content, I'd rate it just as high. What I love most about Ben Folds' music is the fact that he doesn't appear to be putting on some kind of front, and these live trakcs are a perfect example. It's mostly just Ben and his piano, coming through crystal clear and without pretense. Ben Folds is a lyrical genius :D

Another note is that these live tracks are either well-mixed or were very well recorded, which can be an issue with live recordings. They are all obviously live, but audible and not at all muddy.

Of course, I'm biased--I'm even using "The Luckiest" at my wedding ceremony Oct 19.

Still, don't miss buying this during the first press - you'll miss out on the DVD otherwise, or so I've read.
