Free Music Notes for Ben Folds Live

Free Music Review: Captures the spirit of one of his shows
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first bought this album I had no idea it would be so great, probably because his other live(well...semi-live) album, Naked Baby Photos, was merely so-so.

I bought this album shortly before I saw him live in Chicago and it gave me a real idea of what he was like on stage, because it truly captures the spirit of one of his shows. One of the coolest moments in my life thus far has been singing the horn section to army with 2,000 other people while he was pounding away on the piano. And when I listen to that on the CD it's like I'm back at the concert. The same applies to the audience participation in Not the Same.

Even though I miss Ben Folds Five, I think that his shows are better now, because he uses the audience to make up for the lack of a band. This album is great for any Ben Folds fan.

Free Music Review: Another gem from Ben!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic CD that once again proves that Ben is the most gifted live performer alive today. The recording is superb, and on a good system makes you feel like you're sitting right in front of his piano watching him work. In addition to the songs themselves there are a number of extended solos where Ben's piano mastery really shines, and his vocals are impeccable, even on those notes that you know from singing along with him, are hard to hit. The audience also really plays well into this album as they take the part of sax and trumpet, as well as chorus on a few tracks. All in all, this is simply a fantastic CD from start to finish. I am looking forward to the day when Ben comes to Minneapolis or St. Paul so I can go and be mezmerized like I was when I played this CD.

Free Music Review: The Greatest Concert I've Ever Seen
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw the Ben Folds and a Piano tour this summer in Albany, NY. Thought he chose not to put any tracks from that concert on this album, it still sounds the same. Folds is an amazing songwriter as well as lyricist, and this concert gives a display of intimacy that you can't hear in the studio nor in many other live albums. He involves the crowd, tells them stories, and has a few unrealeased songs on here. The songs don't lose anything by the fact that there is no band; on the contrary, they are better. There is no one song that stands out above the rest, but if I had to chose a favorite, it'd be Not the Same. I purchased this album the day it came out and have not stopped listening to it. I recommend it more than any man has ever recommended before (how did that sound?).

Free Music Review: It doesn't get any better than this
Hit: 5 Stars

From the perspective of a Ben Folds fan, this is a wonderful album highlighting the personality, excitement, and humor of a Ben Folds show. For newbies, well this would be a great introduction to the world of Ben Folds. This live CD highlights songs from the "Ben Folds and a piano" tour, so (for those of you unfamiliar with Mr. Folds)if you're expecting to hear a full band, nope...just him and a piano. Trust me, it's much better that way. I've seen him live with a backup band, and they don't click like the Five did. Enough nostalgia. This is a very honest album without Pro Tools editing out all the personality. The perfect mixture of classics, new songs, and a cover make Ben's second solo work very listenable and entertaining.
