Free Music Review: A pleasant surprise
Hit: 4 Stars

For me Ben Harper is very much a hit or miss artist. Most of the music he's put out is forgettable, but every once in a while he just knocks me over with an original song or cover.

I wasn't expecting much from this CD. How's a Claremont, California boy going to hold his own against a sturdy, first class gospel group? But somehow this marriage works. Harper's slide guitar adds a nice dimension to standard gospel arrangements. But it's his voice that shines here. Who'd have thought he could be this soulful?

This is just plain good music. There are better gospel albums out there to be sure. They're just too raw for popular consumption. For gospel for the masses, this album does a fine job.

Free Music Review: HOLY moly this is good
Hit: 4 Stars

What a combo! Ben Harper, road warrior, jam master and granola hero, teams up with the ageless grammy award winning gospel warriors.....this has the potential for 2 outcomes: 1) something that just flat out won't work or 2)something very very special.

Well.....it is option #2!!!!

With old southern standards and brand new originals, the crew reaches deep into gritty southern soul roots and captures the ghosts of the past. You can feel the emotion and passion in each song. You almost think you are in a tiny church somewhere smack in the middle of the Mississippi delta!

I recommend this for any lovers of gospel music. I also do the same for any lovers of classic sould r&b.

Free Music Review: Really good music here
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a wonderful collaboration between Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama which is a group of old gospel singers.

There Will Be a Light plays out more as a Ben Harper album as he sings lead vocals on nearly all of the songs. The Blind Boys are merely backup singers, but what a superb backing group they are!

The music is really good, and it's more upbeat than I expected it to be. As for a gospel album, this music is definitely accessible for people who don't like gospel music.

This was a beautiful matching of two talents and it is very well done. Highly recommended!

Free Music Review: Funky Gospel
Hit: 4 Stars

Bought this CD because I heard the track "Satisfied Mind" on public radio and just had to have it!! This CD is well worth the money just for this track alone. The rest of the CD is great if you are into the origins of funk. Some of the tracks get a little too Gospel for my taste. There are some sweet guitar solos and truly excellent blues riffs scattered throughout the more upbeat tracks. I would definitely suggest buying this CD after buying it I am very intersted in checking out more Ben Harper and more Blind Boys of Alabama fare.

Free Music Review: I don't think so
Hit: 1 Stars

This production is just simply not one of the best singer-songwriter efforts of the year. I don't understand the appeal.
