Free Music Notes for Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook Album

Free Music Review: Impressive, but not perfect
Hit: 5 Stars

Bette Midler has the perfect voice to do justice to a Rosemary Clooney tribute album. Her voice is powerful, beautiful, and full of feeling just like Rosie's was. The main problem with this album lies in the "contemporary" arrangements of timeless songs, cheapening them in a sense. Tenderly and Hey There deserved first-class orchestra renditions. I resent the comment by a previous reviewer who said Hey There would be sleep-inducing if not upbeat. Some people really don't know anything about music. However, Bette's renditions of Hey There and Tenderly are convincing and actually wonderful, thanks to her wonderful vocals - in Hey There it honestly sounds like young Rosie is singing again!
The best songs on the album include the lushly orchestrated You'll Never Know and Memories of You. These are the arrangements that other ballads on the album should have been given. Memories of You would be a fabulous single. White Christmas is wonderful as well. Thankfully, the arrangement lacks the artificial brass sound that some other songs on this collection have. If you want the big band sound, at least make it sound right. In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening falls flat, even with Midler's soaring vocals, because of the elevator style arrangement. It's truly awful, but it swings nonetheless. Much more effective are the duets Sisters and the fun On a Slow Boat to China. Overall, the album is worth buying merely to hear Bette Midler sing the standards (on the few tracks with a real orchestra). These are the songs she was meant to sing!
