Free Music Notes for Cool Yule

Free Music Review: on Top of the Game
Hit: 5 Stars

There's is not much to add: this is a great collection! And it's not so much a Christmas record as it is just a stunning collection of holiday-songs. The band swings heavenly an all tracks and the Divine Miss M is in superb voice! Her rendition of 'I'll be home for Christmas' is breath-taking, her 'What are you doing New Year's Eve' is one of the most elegantly seductive numbers she ever recorded, and 'I've got my love to keep me warm' swings so naturally and builds up so nicely that it's just pure perfection. The highlight is an epic, over 5 minutes long version of 'From a distance' with a brilliant and very clever musical arrangement. Bette adds something new to the song without changing what was so touching in the first place. I hope she will perform it on TV with a big orchstra and a huge choir. In addition to the music I also like the whole package around it. This is pure Bette: the pics are stylish, yet fun and the title is as playful as its star: just classic Bette; on top of the game, but with much gusto and even more fun. One of my favorite albums of the Divine Miss M.

Free Music Review: Christmas music never sounded better
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a very special collection of Christmas songs from Bette Midler. Mele Kalikimaka is my favorite track. It is a very fun song that puts me in a good mood. It is so popular in Hawaii at Christmas time. Cool Yule is a tune with a delightful swing style sound. I love this song. The distinctive voice of Johnny Mathis is still so pleasant and melodic. He sounds so good singing Winter Wonderland and Let It Snow with Bette. I love the classic standards on here like White Christmas and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. What Are You Doing On New Year's Eve is another highlight on this CD. Bette sounds so sensual here, and the piano playing accompanies her vocals so well. From A Distance is one of Bette Midler's most famous tunes. I don't consider it a typical Christmas song, but it is a great song about peace around the world. Come Emmanuel is a beautiful spiritual song that features the violin and acoustic guitar. I like this track a lot. This is an excellent CD of Christmas music.

Free Music Review: A Cool Yule, Indeed!
Hit: 5 Stars

We finally have a Christmas release from Bette, and it is signature Bette at her best. I say this as a Christmas release of traditional songs alone would not be her signature style. Here we have a mix of beautiful traditional songs, and some great fun reads as well.

Mele Kalikimaka is a great nod to Bette's home state of Hawaii, and how appropriate this song was first made a Christmas staple by the Andrews Sisters, and Bing Crosby. Her own, Cool Yule is just that, cool !, and
her medley with Johnny Mathis conjures thoughts of Hot Chocolate on the stove.

Bette really shines on her reads of Christmas standards, White Christmas, I'll Be Home For Christmas, and What Are You Doing New Years Eve .

The releases standout is her reworking of From A Distance, as this is the season when we yearn for peace, and goodwill towards all mankind, how appropriate this anti-war song is.

Cool Yule is a Christmas Classic in the making!

Free Music Review: We Need A Little Christmas - NOW!
Hit: 5 Stars

What a treat. The Divine Miss M strikes again. This hasn't been out of the CD player since I brought it home. There is so much to praise - where do I start? The highlights are "Mele Kalikimaka" - which transported me back to those wonderful "Optimistic Voices" from the "Bette Midler" album from the early 1970s. Steve Allen's "Cool Yule" is a wonderful swing number with a great big band feel. The duet with Johnny Mathis on "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow" is inspired (I adore Johnny Mathis - had a big crush on him when I was a teenager). "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" is delightful, and her reading of Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" is perhaps the best I've ever heard. Midler at 60 has reached yet another career peak. Christmas came a little early this year. Hooray!

Free Music Review: Let's swing with the Divine Miss M.
Hit: 5 Stars

Forever the entertainer, Bette Midler pulls out all the stops for this swinging Christmas album, which has something old, something new, something revisited and absolutely nothing to be blue about.

Bette treats Christmas favorites with due respect while giving them her special touch, whether she's playfully bantering with Johnny Mathis on "Winter Wonderland/Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" or going back to her Hawaiian roots with "Mele Kalikimaka". Another highlight of the album is the yuletide remix of her huge hit "From a Distance".

This is a great addition to any Christmas music collection, and a wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys traditional Christmas carols.
