Free Music Review: Technical, Heavy, Insane

Those are three simple words to describe the sound and the music of Between the Buried and Me. No words can decribe how insanely talented these guys really are. "The Silent Circus" was my first BTBAM album I ever bought, and I really love it, then I instantly became a fan of this band. When I first listened to it, I was completely blown away by the sheer, insane talent these guys posess. Unlike most metalcore bands that basically and typically sound the same, BTBAM showcase a great amount of diversity, talent, and of course originality. As Sam Allen "sam12103" stated in his review for this album "This is how metalcore should sound", I just could not agree with him more. The way I see it, they're just too good to be considered as metalcore. On "The Silent Circus" you can hear hints of death, thrash, progressive metal, hardcore, and even alternative rock as well, all combined in one mindblowing package. The influences on here read like a who's who ranging from Pantera, Radiohead, Suffocation, Dillinger Escape Plan, Opeth, Malevolent Creation, Refused, Converge, Dream Theater, and so on. "Lost Perfection" opens up with some guitar feedback, and around the 40 second mark the assault on the listener's ears begins not long before a wonderful guitar melody erupts. A hand clapping like breakdown is also included around the 3 minute mark, and then at aproximately 3:21 a thick southern metal style groove that would make Pantera mighty proud perfectly transitions, while the next two tracks continue the relentless brutal assault on your senses. The first half of track four "Mordecai" starts off with a barrage of of vicious blast beats, crazy technical guitar riffs, insanely frightening death growls, and torturing screams. Then the song breaks down into a nice peaceful melodic sound, and an awesome flamenco-influenced guitar solo is included as well. This song no doubt stands out the most on this album, and it's my favorite song as well. The next two tracks "Reaction" (track five) and "(Shevanel Take 2)" (track six) take a break from the chaos, and then returns on track seven "Ad a Dglgmut" and so on. Singer/keyboardist Tommy Rogers's vocals on here are just absolutely incredible. This guy has a wide range of vocals styles: Bone chilling death metal growls, frightening high pitched screams, and beyond beautiful clean singing vocals. Paul Waggoner and Nick Fletcher are awesome guitarists. These guys lay down plenty of crushing technical riffs, wonderful melodies, killer breakdowns, and some awesome solos are included as well. Jason King's bass lines are hearable and very groovey. Mark Castillo's drumming is absolutely brutal, vicious, frightening, and absolutely well-timed throughout. Vicious blast beats, bone rattling double bass patterns, this guy can do it all. Forget Atreyu, this is REAL metalcore, and the way metalcore SHOULD sound. If you're new to Between the Buried and Me, start off with this album first, I guaratee you'll love it. Bottom Line: Buy this album now!!
