Free Music Review: Infernal Circus
Hit: 4 Stars

From the moment you hear the initial tremolo picking, we know we are already hearing something special. Special may sound scarce, when compared with album's greatness, which does not fully open to the listener in the first audition. It requires several continuous analysis sessions, to unveil all its secrets. In fact, it resembles an Impressionist painting, a painting of the "Circo Fernando (Ferdinand Circus)" to be more specific (a chic place frequented only by the worthy and with large possessions, pretty famous at the time), painted by Degas or Renoir, that at first sight appears to represent only out of focus and subdued images of human beings in circus tasks, but after careful uninterrupted viewings, reveals an extraordinary attention to detail and a symbolism apparently occulted by the typical indecipherable impressionist imagery. The use of this example fits perfectly in the comparison with "The Silent Circus", not only for the obvious use of circus atmosphere by both pieces, but also because of the effect caused during their examination. Like I said above, the album also needs a lot of attention at first hearing to be deciphered and to understand the cacophony and the group of ideas, presented by it.

It is incredible how BTBAM construct riffs that alternate between extremely high notes and power chords weighing the same as a M1 tank and this, to be honest, always was one of their main characteristics that separated the band, from the rest. I do not believe there is anything out of context on this full-length that even has a secret track, which could be a normal track and once again shows that we are not handling with an ordinary metal band, due to its satirical component, using that typical redneck accent. Indeed, the song possesses an anti-macho scheme, to ridicule that kind of people, with the use of phrases that seem taken from a mental institution for rednecks. Quoting some examples: "I ain't no G-D woman" and "I'm a maaaaaaaaan, you are maaaaaaaan, we are meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen", belong to the set of insults indirectly addressed to the poor fools. All of this, accompanied by na irreprehensible continuous riffing, just like a constant soloing, behind the almost unintelligible grunts. Simply amazing...

Any track of this album has a message or a story behind it, not some worthless phrases invented only to fill the song with words. For example, the last song (before the hidden track) is an anthem against pedophilia which violently demands the death of all child molesters, who steal their innocence way to soon, and shows the versatility of vocalist Thomas Rodgers at its best, debiting growls that would fit the same way in any other grind song. We can find his performance as solid as this in the whole album, with guttural growls and with more metalcore or melodeath oriented vocals. We also have the use of clean vocals around the half of the album, at Mordecai's end, in Reaction and (Shevanel Take 2). It is needed to add that these vocals fit perfectly in the album atmosphere in this time of the full length, contributing to raise the bar even higher, since there is not every day you can find a metalcore album with well implemented vocals, just like the breakdowns. Yes, the breakdown always were one of the highs of BTBAM albums and in this one it is not an exception, they're still present, exactly at the right time, never giving the impression of being thrown in there like there was nothing else to do, nor breaking the song, creating an homogeneity so rarely seen nowadays. The splendid solos squeezed in unthinkable ways are also in there, never disappointing.
Basically, this is another BTBAM full length, a band once considered to be a love/hate band, but actually, with it its two last releases, mainly "Colors", has created a consistent base of good reviews and countless fans, due to its thousand influences and innovations, presented on their albums. Today, "The Silent Circus" is a pearl for the band's fans and it is considered an album indispensable to understand the path and evolution from them, until now. An almost flawless album. Unless we consider the complex first hearing and the clean vocals, which may take a while to enjoy, a negative point.

Just like the german painter Max Liebermann said about Degas, "Degas is a master in creating compositions that seem not composed at all", I believe nowadays we may say the same about Between the Buried and Me about their album structures, in which they are masters in creating songs that seem not composed, or organized ou thought at all. Simply indispensable...

The Silent Circus Poster

Incorporating all styles of metal and hardcore with moshy double bass and spacey, poignant rock, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME'S dizzying opuses are sure to redefine pre-existing notions of "metalcore". BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME find a way to make heavy music refined yet powerful, inventive yet distinct, at times chaotic, then soothing. With a myriad of influences ranging from their hardcore and metal roots to artists like the Smashing Pumpkins and Dream Theater, "The Silent Circus" is a sincere, artistic album that will revolutionize the face of heavy music. After one extremely well received release on Lifeforce Records, the hype on BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME is spreading like wildfire; their Victory debut is proving to be one of the most anticipated, indescribable and groundbreaking metal/hardcore records of 2003.
