The gimmick behind Beyonce's latest album is kind of weak if you ask me. I mean, come on; "I become Sasha Fierce when I get on stage". That is your `story'? So, she compiles her album in two parts. First, we have the Beyonce side. That is your ballads and slow-jams. Then we have the Sasha side. That is your dance club hip-hop tracks.
I prefer Beyonce.
I'll start there I guess. Notice please, I gave this album a B, so I obviously liked it. I just find that it is deeply flawed, and really, the high grade is based on a handful of greatness trailing behind it some memorable mediocrity.
I was one of the few around me that actually loved `If I Were A Boy'. I agree that conceptually it is very bad. The idea that Beyonce suggest here, that all men are basically pigs and don't know how to treat women, is really offensive and childish. The fact that I could easily compile a song about how, if I were a girl, I would overact to everything, care solely about my own feelings, insist that my man spend ALL HIS TIME WITH ME AND ONLY ME and thoughtlessly spend all his money all the while refusing him sex because `I'm tired' is just a testament to how lazy and clich?d this song really is. That said, Beyonce sounds impeccable and, for some reason, I absolutely love it in all its absurdity.
`Halo' is easily the best track on the album (thank you OneRepublic guy). It's so rich with texture and just infects me with greatness. I adore it, completely. `Broken-Hearted Girl' is the strongest ballad (in the classic sense, since I don't really consider `Halo' an outright ballad). It is just beautiful. I have commented before on Beyonce's voice being technically sublime but rather uninteresting. She sounds like a lot of other singers out there. That said, when she really hits the mark she does so flawlessly, and when you take her talent and focus it in the right direction with the right song (this one is just stunning in all areas, including lyrically) you get something that is utterly marvelous.
I still get shivers when I hear her say "I don't wanna love you, in no kinda way."
Songs like `Disappear', `Ave Maria' and `Smash Into You' are beautiful and effective. `Disappear' is a tad repetitive and a little aggravating over time, but it has some stellar moments of vocal purity. There is a simplicity to `Smash Into You' that really gives me goosebumps. It really rests on Beyonce nicely.
`Satellites' is bland, `That's Why You're Beautiful' is just bad.
Now, we have the `Fierceness' herself; Sasha.
`Single Ladies' may very well be THE SONG OF THE YEAR, and while I don't love it like everyone else, even I cannot deny the fact that it is infectious, fun, fresh and totally adorable. I still kind of prefer `Sweet Dreams', but that's just me. Sadly, this side of the album doesn't bare as much fruit as the first. `Diva' is fun, if not a tad uninspiring. I mean, it is totally club worthy, but it just doesn't really have much `standout quality' to it. `Scared of Lonely' is better, if not completely different.
And then you have a slew of, well, meh songs. `Radio', `Hello', `Ego'...they all have their moments but those moments are far from enough to make these worthy tracks. `Ego' especially is just really bad. I mean, there are parts of that song that make me say "well maybe this is good" and then that ridiculous chorus line cuts in again and I go "eek, this is bad." That said, nothing on this album is as bad as `Video Phone'. That is just gross. It has a great beat, but it is so stupid it nearly makes my ears bleed.
So, like I said, the strength of a few stellar tracks and a slew of memorable mediocrity gets this album a grade it may not really deserve. Maybe next time Beyonce will leave Sasha out of the studio and reserve her for the stage only.
