Free Music Notes for Dreamgirls: Music From The Motion Picture [2-CD Deluxe Edition]Free Music Review: Simply dreamy Hit: 5 Stars
It's usually good when commercial movie directors decide to release a Broadway musical-based film to the general public because, for people in my age group (born after 1985) who might not have heard anything from Broadway previous to now (The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago come to mind instantly) due to our age, it shows us what we've been missing. In Dreamgirls' case, it's exceptionally great that Bill Cohn picked up the script, dusted it off and put it in the public eye because this is by far one of the best commercial musicals releasted to date. Beyonce, newcomer and past Idol contesant Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx and the famous Mr. Murphy all create brilliant performances on the movie's accompanying soundtrack, breathing new life into songs written in the 70s. Beyonce is known for being amazing, and on Dreamgirls she is, but it's newcomer Jennifer Hudson that steals the show--literally!--with her passionate vocal delivery and believable acting performance here. For casual fans the regular edition might be the way to go, but for serious listeners the Deluxe Edition on 2 discs is by far the better buy because it features new mixes and bonus material. Whether you're a fan of the original Broadway cast, there's no denying it gives credit to one amazing Broadway musical.
Free Music Review: Worth the extra money Hit: 5 Stars
Along with most of the western world, I saw and enjoyed the film "Dreamgirls" over the holidays.
The music is spectacular, so much that I purchased the soundtrack. There are two versions. The single CD includes the hightlights. The double CD includes the whole soundtrack. It is definitely more worthwhile. On this CD you get all the music, including the other "motown" acts that are featured mostly when the Dreams are trying to breatk into the business.
The world talks about Hudson's incredible solo of "And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going)." I equally enjoyed her solo takes on "I Am Changing" and "One Night Only". She's incomparable. The first song performed by the Dreams, "Move On" shows up about 5th on the CD and really sets the stage for how the group takes over the movie. The group performance (with Eddie Murphy as lead) of the anti-war anthem, "Patience", was a highlight for me. And there is a sweet, sweet moment at the memorial service for Thunder, when Loretta Devine (from the Broadway production and the TV show Boston Public) sings "I Miss You, Old Friend".
One of those CD's you won't stop playing until long after the movie has gone to DVD, "Dreamgirls" is an outstanding buy!
Free Music Review: Jimmy got soul-and so does this! Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, if you saw the movie-then get the soundtrack.
The single CD has most of the prominent stuff, but this deluxe edition has the whole enchilada (the "Pat Boonified" version of "Cadillac Car" is hidden at the end of the official track) from the film. Enough to tide you over with your Dreamgirl fix until the DVD comes out.
Overall, its mostly the hardcore fans who want all things DG who will go for this. Some nice additions to this with the (deservedly) bestselling single CD are the various lovely versions of "Family" (one of my favorites from the film and sure to be heard at every family reunion this summer), the Jackson Five takeoff "Prefect World" is a wonderful approximation of the original J5 sound, as well as songs by other performers aside from the DGs in the film. However, I will agree with another reviewer that the added remixes are a bit much in the padding dept. But this is not enough to bring down the overwhelming positives of this CD.
As with the film itself, its an emotional experience to treasure. As Eddie Murphy sings in "Jimmy's Rap," "Jimmy Got Soul"-and so does this CD!
Free Music Review: They are my DreamGirls!! Hit: 5 Stars
I have been excited about this movie for years. When I heard about some of the casting choices I was a little worried. Beyonce? Eddie Murphy? How weel could Jennifer Hudson compare with Jennifer Holiday? Well, now that I have the CD all i can say is THANK GOD!! The cast gives their all and pulls it off way better than could ever be hoped for. Ms. Hudson's rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" could bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardened, cold hearted person. The passion she exudes is breathtaking. Eddie Murphy also brought a smile to my face. What a consumate performer. True he had that horrible CD in the 90's, but all is forgiven for the spot-on performance he gives here. When the movie opens on Dec 25, I am going to be at the first showing and probably going to see it quite a few times. I am so mad I missed the play when it was in Seattle a few years ago. This could be better for Movie Musicals than Chicago was. But of course only time will tell. Once the moive opens the world will know what I've known all along. Movie musicals are not dead! Our time has come again.
Free Music Review: Excellent CD Hit: 5 Stars
I bought the two-CD edition because I didn't want to miss a single song. I'm glad I did. Along with two dance remixes ("One Night Only" and "And I'm Telling You," it also includes Loretta Devine's lovely "Goodbye Old Friend." I loved the movie and this CD is like watching it all over again. Listening to it brings back the power of some of the performances (and the tears). All of Jennifer's songs are great, but I find myself really enjoying "One Night Only." "Love You I Do" is also good.
I am also even more impressed by Eddie Murphy's vocals. He really can sing! "Jimmy's Rap" is fun. Beyonce's "Listen" is fabulous and I like "Patience" a lot too. That song has such a Marvin Gaye vibe, it's hard to believe that it was written in this century!
If you are on the fence about whether or not to buy the deluxe version, spend the extra ten bucks. It's worth it. I predict this soundtrack is going to win some serious awards (Grammy, Oscar) along with Jennifer Hudson who deserves all the praise she is getting for her outstanding debut.
