Free Music Review: DREAMGIRLS WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY
Hit: 5 Stars

This 2 CD edition of the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack is amazing. I recently bought the new remastered edition of the Broadway version of this show and I was extremely disappointed. This version is an entirely different animal. The perfomances are outstanding and for those who wondered how Jennifer Hudson stacks up to Jennifer Holiday's Effie White, have no fears. She is incredible! Her rendition of "And I Am Telling You" will bring grown men to tears. Beyonce gets her own showstopper here, "Listen" and she does not disappoint. Forget "Party All The Time", Eddie Murphy sings the hell out of his role as James Thunder Early. Nice bonuses on this 2 CD set include a duet of "When I First Saw You" between Beyonce and Jamie Foxx that is not in the film. Also, two fantastic dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You" which just blew me out of the water. Skip the two disc Broadway version and get this one, you will not be disappointed. Run out to see the movie because as fantastic as this set is, the movie is even better!!

Free Music Review: A DREAM Soundtrack!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Dreamgirls 2-CD Deluxe Edition Soundtrack is by far my favorite soundtrack that I own! The music has EVERYTHING--emotion, drama, humor, sadness, amazing harmonies, powerful voices, great accompaniment--EVERYTHING!!!! Beyonce, Jamie, Anika, and Eddie are all FANTASTIC!! And then of course there is JENNIFER HUDSON who will blow you out of the water!! Her version of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" is heart-wrenching! Every single one of her vocals will give you chills! I LOVE the new song "Love You I Do." It is a WONDERFUL toe-tapping addition to this fabulous score.

Other highlights include "Move," "It's All Over," "I Am Changing," "Patience," "One Night Only," "Listen," "Hard To Say Goodbye," "Dreamgirls (Finale)," and "Curtain Call." Also, at the end of the very last track on the second track they added a little "Easter egg" of Effie singing, "this time Effie White is gonna win!"

PLEASE do yourself a favor and see this INCREDIBLE film and buy the soundtrack!! You won't be sorry!

Free Music Review: Jennifer Holliday would blow them all out of the water!!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Really good film, some really good performances (Eddie Murphy was awesome), and some klunkers (Beyonce & Foxx - yawn). Then there's all the hoopla about Jennifer Hudson. It's a dream come true for her but ya gotta admit - Jennifer Holliday's performance on Broadway was much better, much more polished, much more top and bottom, just much more oomph! Listen to the original cast album and you'll see (she won two Grammy's)!!! Unfortunately Holliday never got the right vehicle or exposure to show what an enourmous talent she is (still). While I loved Hudson's performance (albeit lots of forced vibrato, flat or sharp notes, and awkward dialogue) and believe this is just the beginning of a wonderful career, she has a long way to go and is far from deserving an Oscar IMHO. Sorry for the Holliday lovefest, but I really think Hudson's performance should be put in perspective. Too bad Jennifer Holliday wasn't a few years younger and didn't recreate her original role - now THAT would have been worthy of an Oscar!

Free Music Review: The joy is the music; lyrics pack a punch
Hit: 5 Stars

Without retreading comments made previously by other reviewers, I would like to point out that these are not mearly songs, this is an original soundtrack recording of a musical. As such, you can tap your toes or enjoy the beat, but unless you listen to the lyrics of the songs, you will miss their message and the role that those messages perform in the telling of the story.

The best song in the sound track is not, in my humble opinion, the much bandied "And I am Telling You" sung by Jennifer Hudson, but instead Hudson's "I am Changing". It takes big lungs and a voice to sing "Telling You" but it takes skill and range to perform "I Am Changing" which starts off in a very intimate fashion and builds to a climatic finish.

But the soundtrack by itself does one other thing - exposing the weakness of "Deena Jones and the Dreams" without Effie. Without Effie as anchor, the Dreams song book becomes a tuft frivolus cotton-candy: light, fluffy and unsatisfying.

Free Music Review: If you liked the movie, you'll LOVE the soundtrack!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I can't speak for anyone else, but Dreamgirls was an incredibly well done movie... as was the music. The people in charge of "updating" the soundtrack did an excellent job of bringing it a little more current without taking away from it's original score. If anything, they just made the original a whole lot better. I saw the movie 3x and loved it more each time. I'm also a HUGE fan of Beyonce and Jamie Foxx, so getting them on a movie soundtrack was a plus. I didn't have the opportunity to watch Jennifer Hudson on American Idol; I think I jumped on the show's bandwagon about 3 seasons ago. However, I regret NOT watching her season... WHAT A VOICE! You don't want her to stop singing... the soundtrack never gets boring. And, uh, am I the only one who never knew Eddie Murphy sang?! Well, he did... and he DOES! Get this soundtrack; the double CD one has all the songs, plus ones that fade into the background on the big screen. You'll love it! Enjoy!
