Free Music Notes for Big Blue BallFree Music Review: Big Blue Ball Hit: 5 Stars
'Big Blue Ball' is a true world album in every sense of the word, with a hugely diverse and inspiring collection of artists in one place. From the wonderful album opener 'Whole Thing' you know you're in for a real treat. This song sounds strongly like a Peter Gabriel solo track, which is no bad thing at all. 'Habibe' has a beautiful Arabic feel, 'Shadow' is reminiscent of the Gypsy kings and 'Altus Silva' has heavenly celtic influences. Just some of the world influences on show here. There are haunting and moving lyrics on 'Everything Comes From You' and I could sit back and immerse myself in this track over and over. 'Burn You Up, Burn You Down' was originally heard on Peter Gabriel's 'Hit' CD and this alternative version is just as good nestled in the middle of this album. The sessions for this album became a hot bed of creativity and poetry and it is evident on every track. As Peter Gabriel described it, the sessions became like a musical dating agency with many artists coming together and writing and recording, and you can see that this album is the wonderful result of all those collaborations. The offspring of all those various musical liaisons. 'Rivers' has moving vocals and brooding emotion throughout and although my least favourite, the rap of 'Jijy' shows just how diverse and varied this album actually is. Finally you get the excellent and uplifting album closer 'Big Blue Ball' which tops off an evocative and stirring musical journey. It is rare for me to give a virtual track by track run down of an album but this offers so much variety, passion and beautiful music that every song here warrants a mention. A superb album and as you may have guessed, one I highly recommend.

Free Music Review: Around the World in 11 Songs Hit: 5 Stars
"Big Blue Ball" is a compilation culled from Peter Gabriel's three Recording Weeks in the '90s (1991,1992,1995). Gabriel invited world music artists as diverse as Egypt's Natacha Atlas, Ireland's Sinead O'Connor, Madagascar's Rossy and Hungary's Marta Sebestyen to his home studio in Wiltshire for freeform music. Thousands of recordings were made... and these 11 made into the whole wide world.
"Big Blue Ball" is an amazing collaborative work. "Whole Thing" is an inspirational opening song. Natacha Atlas and Hossam Ramzy provide the intoxicating, sensual "Habibe (Beloved)",evocative of an amorous night in the shadow of the pyramids. "Altus Silva" blends African and Celtic music. Sinead O'Connor powerfully sings with Chinese flautists in "Everything comes from you",a powerful plea for peace and against terrorism. When you consider it was sung in '95,it was eerily prophetic. "Forest" and "Rivers" are organic pieces weaving together many musical styles. The closing song, "Big Blue Ball" is an inspirational, powerful piece. In a way,it shares sentiments with John Lennon's "Imagine." It sums up the purpose of Gabriel's Recording Weeks-to unite people through music, since we live on one "big blue ball."
"Big Blue Ball" is tantalizing as well. There are recordings still in the vault--or perhaps Gabriel should revive Recording Weeks at his Real World Studio. "Big Blue Ball" is a musical journey for the mind and the soul!
Free Music Review: WOW! What A Terrific Album! Hit: 5 Stars
I was totally not expecting this to be such a great album. As a Peter Gabriel fan I was not very excited for this because I knew it was not a real "Gabriel album" as well as having bought and listened to music by musicians from other countries and not being very impressed. I sampled the songs and was still not very interested and didn't think it would be all that good but I still went and bought it the day it came out and man was that a great idea.
If you're a Gabriel fan or fan of "world music" as well liking a bit of spirituality in your music then this is an album for you. Just one listen and I knew this one was special. Now I haven't listened to it many times so I can't figure how to explain it, you just have to listen. The music just flows, the beats are heavy, the sound quality is crisp, and the sincerity of the vocalists adds to the depth of this collection of timeless music. It's terrific just go buy it.
Free Music Review: The rumors were true Hit: 5 Stars
Too bad the grousing vinyl folks are included here to weigh down the rating of this wondrous album. I had read years ago about these magical sessions and had wondered for years about the possibility of hearing them. I am not only not dissapointed by undue expectation (as I was by Gabriel's last solo effort), but thrilled to glimpse a part of this legendary time of community at Real World. The joy and spontaneity of these performances shine through, the quality of the recording (I would assume all analog, thus accounting for the fullness evident), and the originality inherent in the world-fusion aspect, make this a one of a kind must-have.
Peter Gabriel's contributions are obvious in the overall style of production and it's great to hear his voice on a couple of songs, but the real magic here is the merging of this diverse group of stellar musicians, creating what they so brilliantly do - together.
Free Music Review: Straight From The Heart Hit: 5 Stars
From tapes compiled during the early-1990s festivals for musicians at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, producers Stephen Hague, Karl Wallinger and Gabriel put together an outstanding retrospective from the events.
The list of musicians put the "world" in "World Music," and include Papa Wemba, Billy Cobham, Wobble, Wallinger, Sinead O'Connor and Hukwe Zawose. Gabriel takes the lead vocal role on several tracks, but he is more like a super-glue that brought the artists together to share their styles in a considerably looser atmosphere than typically found in recording sessions.
The U.S. release was facilitated through a venture-capital trust initiative, hence Gabriel (finally) had control over the production and content. This is straight from Gabriel's heart and is a celebration of the wonderful colors that music provides to the universal canvas of joy and peace.
