Free Music Notes for The Lost TapesFree Music Review: Lost Tapes/Lost Times Hit: 5 Stars
I gave this Big Brother/Janis CD 5 stars not because the recordings were flawlessly produced, but because they were not. I gave it the top rating because this is really close to the Big Brother I remember at the shows I saw.
In my humble opinion Janis was at her best with Big Brother; and Big Brother was at their best with Janis. If you like the album 'Cheap Thrills' you will most likely appreciate these pre-Cheap Thrills Big Brother recordings.
I was fortunate enough to hear many of the great rock bands in San Francisco venues back in the late 1960/early 70s. You could dance, you could sit on the floor, get close enough to see the artists as well as hear them.
I put a lot of these tracks on a play list along with others of the era, early Airplane, the Dead, Quicksilver, Hot Tuna. Put that on shuffle and they transport me back to that earlier time....
The San Francisco sound.
Free Music Review: Janis & Big Brother In Full Force Hit: 5 Stars
Any time new JJ tracks surface is cause for celebration. My guess is the time period is late '66 or early '67.
Disc 1 has never been released in any form - not even a bootleg! It is a formative step in the development of seminal band. It is also interesting to hear a band at this stage, before fame, money and development of large egos. What you're getting is a band performance, not a singer and a back up band. This is a seamless unit, the pure enjoyment of making music without the destructive pressures. Get it now!
Free Music Review: good buy, good sound quality Hit: 5 Stars
This is a Big Brother album not just Janis with backup. This is a band all working together which shows off Janis' , and everyone else's, power to its best I always felt. The guys sound great. Some of the early hippier songs like Amazing Grace are a real delight.
Free Music Review: great music Hit: 5 Stars
I had forgotton just how great early Big Brother with Janis was. They are some of the most talented and creative musicians out there from the era. The sound recording is excellent too. Again, really great music!
Free Music Review: Big Brother and Janis '66: R-A-W! Hit: 4 Stars
When I purchased this and played Disc One I'll admit I thought I may have purchased a CD that I was going to play one time and then stow away in my CD cabinet. The first disc is legendary because it's probably one of the earliest recorded concert sets you're ever going to hear of Big Brother and The Holding Company soon after Janis joined the band. Peter Albin's insane rant on "The Great White Guru" was funny for about a minute, then it got downright annoying! The band is trying to click into their soon to be trademark sound but it's too early and the wheels aren't that oiled yet. My surprise came when I popped in Disc Two! Come to find out this had already been issued many years ago as a Rhino release called "Cheaper Thrills." However it's good that it's been re-released because this particular concert SMOKES!!!! Save for the last bonus track which was recorded in a television studio in April of 1967, this is an early show from BB&THC where the band was firing on all cylinders! When fellow San Franciscans talk about having their minds blown seeing BH&THC in the early days, this concert is a prime example of what they must have experienced! Janis is in top notch form here, sounding great and not shrill like she sometimes would when drugs and alcohol were getting the best of her in the later days. And the band was TIGHT on this night! The sound quality is a little on the bootleg side but is great none the less. So I do recommend this to all fans of the group, especially the 2nd disc. When Big Brother was ON, they were ON!
