Free Music Review: Why'd he have to go?!

Damn, man. Big L was ill. It's unfortunate he only got to put out two albums, and he wasn't even alive I think when this album was finished and released. Ebonics was the first Big L song I ever heard, and I remember being like, "DAMN this man is SICK with it!" Some great stories on here ("Casualties of a Dice Game, " "The Heist"), Ebonics has great wordplay and flow to it. It's definitely a banger. ""Deadly Combination" with 2Pac was pretty ill, but I think Big L and Big Pun or B.I.G. would've been better. 2Pac was more of a complete artist, while Big L and the others mentioned were just nasty emcees who could just spit some ill rhymes with a sick flow. I could always count on guys like Big L (and there are few) to deliver some verses that just made me sit there and nod my head. I'll admit, I haven't listened to this album in a minute now, but Big L always shined. If you're really into Hip Hop I'd have to recommend this. If you're a casual rap fan who doesn't LOVE Hip Hop, no offense, you might not want to rush into buying this. Big L was a great emcee and rapper, but songwriting and crossover appeal wasn't really his thing. Definitely check it out though, and give it a shot. Big L was awesome at what he did, and he deserved more of a shot than he was given. Oh well, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous and The Big Picture were dope albums. We just should have more.

When the silky-voiced Big L was alive he was fast becoming the king of the lewd punch line. So it's too bad The Big Picture joins a slew of posthumous releases (Tupac, Notorious B.I.G.) that leave you feeling queasy. Would L be performing backflips in his grave over this final product? Probably not, since some of the cr?me de la cr?me of rap producers (DJ Premier, Pete Rock) were hauled in to do vocal patchwork when L hadn't completed a song. The numerous ill collabos don't hurt either. On "Platinum Plus" Big Daddy Kane tears it up like it was 1992, while the late Tupac's contribution to "Deadly Combination" is chilling. Big L's debut, Lifestyles Ov Da Poor and Dangerous, was one of the most vulgar hip-hop albums of all time (just remember his ultraviolent threats on "All Black" or "Danger Zone," where he raps "they said a real man won't hit a girl, well I ain't real, 'cause I beat bitches up"). So then it's no surprise that his narratives still revolve around unenlightened sexcapades and gunplay ("The Heist," "Casualties of a Dice Game"). "Ebonics," the unofficial slang dictionary classic, showcases L at his artistic apex. Thankfully, instead of a posthumous album rife with studio outtakes and butchered freestyles that shouldn't see the light of day (OK, so maybe two versions of the "The Heist" was unnecessary), this release gels well. --Dalton HigginsRap & Hip-Hop Music CDs
