Free Music Notes for Big River: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (1985 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: AMERICAN GOLD
Hit: 5 Stars

Many people probably only know Roger Miller from the somewhat goofy songs that he wrote, but he was truly a genius who wrote and performed a variety of songs. There is such a variety of songs here written in several different styles. Some of the serious songs are fully as good as the lighthearted songs. This truly does show what an amazing person Roger Miller was and his mastery of many different types and styles of music. After listening to the music, I would love to see a stage production of this, as I never have. There aren't many show albums that sound interesting enough to make you want to go see the play, but this one sure does. I guess the only disappointment is that Roger Miller doesn't perform any of the songs himself. Most of the songs are quite short (averaging probably around two minutes each), but much of Miller's output consisted of short songs. Perhaps it is because he could say more in two minutes that many song writer's could in four (or more). It's a shame that this hasn't become more well known and performed more often. Cats (for example) had a very long run and some people think it was awful.

Free Music Review: Mark Twain's Heart and Soul
Hit: 5 Stars

After seeing "Big River" at our local theater, it was clear that Roger Miller had absorbed what Mark Twain wrote, then released Twain's captured spirit in this glorious production. The heart-rending "River in the Rain" expresses in music what Twain penned in words. I've read nearly everything Twain wrote, I've visited the caves where Tom and Becky were lost, and I'm half Southern myself, so I was thrilled by almost every number on this album. I'm past crying when I listen to "Worlds Apart". You'll swear "Crossing to the Other Side" was a genuine spiritual. (How could a white guy write this?) My entire family howls with laughter at "Guv'ment", and we are not prone to howling. Roger Miller was more than "King of the Road". His talent was as deep and as broad as the Mississippi.

Free Music Review: Huck and Jim in Essence
Hit: 5 Stars

Fun loving country cornpone musician Roger Miller did the Broadway show behind this CD, catching the essence of Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" mix of satire and seriousness, using a variety of musical types: country instruments (guitar, fiddle, harmonica, jaw's harp), New Orleans jazz ("When the Sun Goes Down in the South"), white country gospel ("Waitin' for the Light to Shine"), black gospel ("The Crossing," "How Blessed We Are," and "Free at Last"), and zaniness typical of Miller's "Dang Me" and "King of the Road" days ("Hand for the Hog," "Arkansas," "The Royal Nonesuch"), and harmonious romantic ballads ("You Oughta Be Here with Me" and "Maybe Leavin's Not the Only Way to Go"). The relationship between Jim and Huck is heard in "River in the Rain," "Worlds Apart," and "Muddy Water,"

Free Music Review: This music is the best to dance to if you're feelin' alive!
Hit: 5 Stars

I LOVE this music, it gets you up on your feet if you feel like moving, and the lyrics are really cute! I really hate country music, but even someone like me can get attached to this southern-country twang music, it's fun to listen to and GREAT to dance to. My school did a concert with some of this music, and they had choreography along with it, and it was really cool. The ballads are really pretty, and the 'twang' songs (as I call them) are fast moving and fun. I would recommend this CD to anyone, even if they don't like country (this CD had eat away at the best of us) and click on that buy button, because it's a price you can't beat, fast service you can't compare with anyone else, and wonderful music to listen to all day long!

Free Music Review: It deserves 10 stars!
Hit: 5 Stars

Like at least one other reviewer, I have neither acted in nor seen this wonderful musical. I absolutely LOVE every song on this disc! I have to say that when it comes to the uptempo songs "When the Sun goes Down in the South" has one of my favorite lyrics: "Step right up and see the duo bodily do the doo wah diddy on the clothesline" talk about a bouncy lyric! And I don't know about you all, but I get such a lump in my throat when the orchestra builds after the bridge of "Maybe Leavin's not the Only Way to Go". So here's my question to all you booking agents and touring companies out there: Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE see a Nationsl Tour??? I missed out on this one the first time through!
