Free Music Notes for Big River: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (1985 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: At last, an American Musical that is truly American!
Hit: 5 Stars

This music is quite different from the orchestrated, continuously show-stopping musicals that pervade Broadway today. Instead of creating ballad after grand ballad, the composers chose to showcase the wonderful music of our own nation. From the Country/Western to the Blues to the Negro Spiritual, every song provides a unique flavor of Americana. This is not to say the singing is low quality. The part of Jim is beautifully sung, and Huck grows on me more each time I listen to him. Twain would have been proud of this one

Free Music Review: Outstanding vocaliziation by entire company
Hit: 5 Stars

This musical is absolutely outstanding... the process of somehow metamorphisizing Huckleberry Finn into a more mature being tends to be over looked by many when it is pulled off beautifully. The vocal timbres of the cast is outstanding, particularly that of Jim Henry and Mary Jane Wilkes in "Leavin's not the only way to go" superb. As well as the characterization of Pap Finn, the Duke, King, and of course, Tom Sawyer. This musical will make you laugh, cry, and keep you up at night listening in awe.

Free Music Review: Absolutely Inspired
Hit: 5 Stars

I never had the opportunity to see this on the stage, but yet this CD ranks among my favorites. Most everyone is familiar with the story, so not seeing the production is no hinderance to enjoying the tunes.

Big River is a phenomenal effort, and I would be hard pressed to think of anything much better to spend an hour of someone's "free time" listening to.

This would be a great "gateway CD" to get friends who are not interested in musicals to perk up their ears.

Free Music Review: Best soundtrack since Phantom of the Opera!
Hit: 5 Stars

A local high school gave a performance of this show, and I went to see it ONLY b/c my best friend was playing the trumpet in the pit orchestra (I didn't think I'd like it) and I fell in love with the show five minutes into the first song! The songs are amazing, and can touch you in so many ways! The ballads are beautiful, and all of the songs have a beat and mood that can transport you to the Mississippi River! I highly recommend it! "How 'bout a hand for the hog?"

Free Music Review: BIG SURPRISE
Hit: 5 Stars

I just recently went and saw a community performance of this, and i was very surprise. i was expecting an immature hick rendition of the story of huck finn. This was tastefully done and touched me in ways i wasn't expecting. Jim's songs are strong, and his harmonies with huck are touching. the writer's use of harmonies are appropriate and wonderful, although this is not my favorite, the music is wonderful, and i recommend u see this wildy humorous and enjoyable play.
