Free Music Review: Tony and Bill go together like white and rice

This is simply a wonderful piece of innovative, interpretative, interactive vocal and piano jazz by two legends of their domain. No wonder, then, that I just don't want it to stop (and neither did they, as they came back later with Together Again). Tony Bennett's voice is spot on in this recording, and it sounds like he's just hanging out at Bill's, entertaining the neighbors: completely at ease and full of confidence that no one else in the room can sing like he can. Bill sounds like he always sounds: positively aware that he is defining a jazz sound that would be imitated and emulated for decades to come. The song selection is a little dreary, but, when in a melancholy mood, this music really hits the spot. Bill and Tony do try to keep from dragging you into the pity pit with "When in Rome", which is downright funny at times, and the surprisingly up "Waltz for Debby", which at least holds out hope for whoever is listening to the song as they watch Debby grow up and out of their lives. Tony's pleading and resonant acceptance of disappointment in "Some Other Time" is depressingly touching, especially his downward glissando when he sings, "Oh well..." and as with Jazz, he doesn't miss a note through any of the takes and alternates. (That recording also contains some interesting notes about the occasion of Tony and Bill first working together on this CD.) The liner notes are detailed and pertinent, and the alternate takes/bonus tracks give some insight into the approach these two took to this production. All in all, this is a highly listenable work which sets the bar for jazz collaborations so high your nose will bleed if you succeed in reaching it. Great!
