Free Music Review: Alternately playful and contemplative
Hit: 5 Stars

This is my first exposure to the music of jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and I have to say I was thrilled. EAST WEST is comprised of two live sets, with one recorded in 2004 at Yoshi's in Oakland, California (WEST) and the other recorded in 2003 at The Village Vanguard in New York, New York (EAST). Overall, this album is a fine recording of some highly atmospheric, guitar-led jazz, with just a tiny hint of the avant-garde here and there along with some blues. A mix of significantly altered cover tunes and group originals are included on this 2-CD set.

Bill (electric guitar, acoustic guitar and loops) is joined by Viktor Krauss (electric bass guitar WEST), Tony Scherr (electric/acoustic bass EAST) and Kenny Wollesen (drums EAST and WEST). All of these guys are talented musicians and their gift for improvisation never fails to amaze. There is an excellent group dynamic and ensemble sound, which is a result of the fact that these guys really listen to one another.

Bill has a unique style that is virtuosic, yet understated and at times, atmospheric. His use of a clean tone on the electric works well, particularly in the quieter sections. Although his technique is dazzling, Bill's use of space and silence is even moreso. The use of tape loops is also unusual in this setting but they are very effective - in fact, I am reminded somewhat of Robert Fripp. What I liked the most was that for just a trio, this music is very interesting and employs a range of dynamics and a lot of unusual tone color is introduced with the tape loops. There also seems to be a subtle difference between the two sets, with WEST being a bit more playful and loose and the EAST set being a bit jazzier and maybe even a little bit more serious.

You would never know that this is a live recording. The sound quality is excellent and the (small) audience can only be heard at the end of each track.

All in all this is a fine album that features the superb jazz guitar of Bill Frisell and is certainly one of the more interesting albums of this type that I have heard.

East/West Poster

On East/West Bill Frisell proves once again he is one of the most prolific players of his generation. While it's a measure of his success that he's able to pursue a wide variety of projects, the bottom line is his insatiable musical curiosity warrants all the attention he receives. East/West is a two-disc live set, one recorded on each coast. All are trio performances, with drummer Kenny Wollesen playing throughout, Viktor Krauss on bass in California, Tony Scherr in New York. So supple is the interplay that the stylistic change in the two bassists makes for a subtly different character to each of the nights. Frisell focuses on a mix traditional, folk, and even soul in the west; in the east there's a bit more drawn from the jazz canon (though not entirely, as the version of "Crazy" is a marvel as Scherr sets down his bass and picks up an acoustic guitar). --David Greenberger
Guitarist and 2005 Grammy Award winner Bill Frisell's East/West is a double-disc set featuring two trio performances: Frisell on guitar and Kenny Wolleson on drums and percussion, with Tony Scherr on bass for the East disc, which was recorded at New York's Village Vanguard, and Viktor Krauss on bass for West, recorded at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA.
