...there are no ratings lower than 3 stars for this extraordinary album, and apparently that 3 should have been a 5 by the author's own admission. That says more than I could ever add, but I'll try.
Ever since my buddy Tom turned me on to this album 10 years ago, I've tried to "pay it forward" by turning others on to it, and so far everyone who has heard it has been mighty impressed, if not blown away.
I'm not very good at writing detailed reviews, so I'll just say this: "Bill Withers at Carnegie Hall" should be in everyone's music collection. It is that important, moving, incredible.
So many great moments in this album: the "Use Me" jam is an obvious highlight, but listen to "Hope She'll Be Happier"... dig the way Bill sings "But she's gone....". If that doesn't make you feel something.... well..... I don't know what to tell ya.

Despite the import of the occasion--an October 1972 night at America's most prestigious hall--what really impresses about Bill Withers's Live at Carnegie Hall is the good feeling and sense of interplay passed between the star, his band, and the audience. From the surpassingly casual opening of "Use Me" and its build through eight-plus minutes and an extended ending to the complexity and occasional joy of Withers's socio-personal "Lean on Me," "I Can't Write Left-Handed," and a medley of "Harlem" and "Cold Bologna," Carnegie is an underappreciated document of what for a moment was progressive R&B.
