Her voice was not at its best by this point, but her artistry was so great that even in that condition, the songs are powerful and irresistible. The contrast between the smooth orchestral backing and her ragged voice makes the recording even more compelling. The remastered sound is excellent, and this version also includes an informative booklet with the original liner notes, as well as several alternate takes.
This CD, along with the Legacy set of her early recordings with Columbia, and the Decca set from the middle of her career, gives the listener a full overview of one of this century's great singers.
