Marking what would have been her ninetieth birthday (April 7), Hip-O Records has released the definitive Billie Holiday collection. Not only do you get 42 digitally remastered recordings spanning her all too brief career from 1935 to 1958 (including the Alladin, Brunswick, Capitol, Clef, Columbia, Commodore, Decca, Okeh and Verve labels); you get archival footage of "Lady Day" from television and film appearances, including her film debut in a Duke Ellington short from 1935, along with rare audio-only tracks.
In the 1930's, Holiday was already making a name for herself, performing with such musicians as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and perhaps most significantly saxophonist Lester Young (who dubbed her "Lady Day"). In 1939, she recorded the song that established her as a serious artist, the politically charged "Strange Fruit," a song which forced her white audience to grapple with lynching and racism. While she wrote few of the songs here, she did write the lyrics for what is regarded as her signature song, "Lady Sings the Blues," with the line "The blues ain't nothing but a pain in your heart." [Note: The song became the title of a 1972 biopic starring Diana Ross.] She could also write socially conscious songs like "God Bless the Child," where she declares "Yes, the strong ones get more / While the Weak ones fade / Empty pockets don't ever make the grade."
Nearly fifty years after her untimely death at 44, Holiday's music looms large on the musical landscape; and this 2-disc, 1-DVD collection is a testament to the power of her genius. ESSENTIAL
