Free Music Notes for Mermaid AvenueFree Music Review: Finally something I can really enjoy Hit: 5 Stars
These days it is pretty difficult to find tuneful music with insightful/intelligent/provocative lyrics. Mermaid Avenue delivers in spades! With Woody Guthrie furnishing the lyrics and Wilco and Billy Bragg the tunes, this collection is manna from heaven. My wife is sick of it since I've played it so often. Next to Joe Gruscheky's Coming Home CD, this is probably the best CD of 1998 so far. Few songs rise to the level of the tunes on this CD.
Free Music Review: mesmerising Hit: 5 Stars
The other reviews cover the material quite thoroughly, but I feel like I have to acknowledge the absolute beauty and timelesness of some of the songs. To be completely honest I had never heard of Bragg or Wilco and was only vaguely familiar with Woody Guthrie. That was until I heard "California Stars" in a friends car while. I instantly fell in love with the song and have begun to explore this new genre of music with great enthusiasm.
Free Music Review: simply charming Hit: 5 Stars
It's hard to believe the music for these lyrics was written many years after Guthrie died. What a wonderful collaboration. Everything works so well together on this album - from the lyrics and music to the instrumentation, the band, the vocals, and the production. Jeff Tweedy's voice is wonderful for this recording. This is the perfect blend of rock and folk feel, kinda like Neil Young. Thank God someone is still making albums like this.
Free Music Review: Now how about a DVD Audio version? Hit: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful CD and has enjoyed heavy rotation in my player since I first got hold of it. But after hearing the potential of DVD Audio on a couple of other titles (Natalie Merchants TIGERLILY, for instance), I would love to see Elektra issue this title in the same format. To hear "California Stars" or "The Unwelcome Guest" in a 5.1 surround presentation, or even 24-bit stereo, would be heavenly.
Free Music Review: Get it NOW Hit: 5 Stars
Album of the year, masterpiece, a must, instant classic, stunning, soon to be your favorite... whatever cliche you can think of applies to this incredible recording. I'm not a big fan of Billy Bragg or Wilco, but together they've made magic. Every cut will be burned into your memory, but "California Stars" could be the most beautiful song I've heard in the past five years. Can't wait for the follow-up.
