Free Music Notes for Mermaid AvenueFree Music Review: A Slow Burn Sure Thing Hit: 5 Stars
While I like Billy Bragg's politics, I'm not the greatest fan of his music. This album is not necessarily one that makes you go 'Wow!' and leap in the air when you first hear it. It creeps up on you unawares. I only realised how much I liked it when I heard it again, and I found myself smiling in recognition of each of the tracks as they came up. Brilliant stuff, like an old mate you've not seen in a while.
Free Music Review: Nothing to add but agreement Hit: 5 Stars
Billy Bragg and Wilco have done an excellent job with this CD, and Natalie Merchant makes nice contributions as well. It is truly beautiful. Whether you are a Guthrie fan or not, you will like this. It is also good for pop and country music fans, if you want an introduction into the great roots of your music. It is pleasant and accessible. Of course if you are a fan of folk music, this is essential.
Free Music Review: A Stunning Album Hit: 5 Stars
The tracks on this album range from very good to excellent, and the album as a whole hangs together well. The music is perhaps not what Billy Bragg purists will expect, and it's not what Woody Guthrie purists would expect either. But this album is a collaboration, not a tribute - the music is a mixture of both, and draws on the strengths of each. The end result is an abosultely stunning album.
Free Music Review: Album of the year Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not particularly a fan of either Wilco or Billy Bragg, or even Woodie Guthrie for that matter, but this combination of modern folk/rock music with Woody's lyrics is highly original, fresh as can be, and both retro and contemporary at the same time. The music is sensitive to the spirit of the words, the performances are truly heart-felt, and the production is top notch. A great record.
Free Music Review: Fantastic match-Woody Guthrie's lyrics & Bragg/Wilco music!! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is terrific!! It is a true collaboration of the late Woody Guthrie and the modern folkys, Billy Bragg and Wilco. This is the best folk album that I have heard in while and definitely this year. I think it is a shoe-in for Best Folk Album of the Year Grammy (deserves at least a nomination for Best Album of the Year Grammy also). A must buy for any folk music fans.
