Free Music Notes for Mermaid AvenueFree Music Review: A must own cd. Hit: 5 Stars
This cd made me a fan of Billy Bragg, Wilco and a even bigger fan of Woody's. His words were so prolific. I agree w/ much of what's already been written, the only thing I would like to add is the strong George Harrison style slide is something that others hadn't noted. I think Billy's music was great, I loved the varied approaches.
Free Music Review: An intersting approach to Guetherie's jovial lyricism Hit: 5 Stars
Billy Bragg and Wilco have produced a wonderful interpretation of these jovial songs composed by Guetherie to his wife and children.Such beautiful craftsmanship is poorly lacking in today's pop scene, yet their approach to these unpublished songs give the music true feeling and integrity.I highly recommend this interesting albumn.
Free Music Review: Spooky, even in its joy. Hit: 5 Stars
The songs grab you instantly, as if Woody himself was singing from the grave, and they work that way because of the respect that Bragg and the others show for the lyrics. "California Stars" is one of the loveliest songs of the year. Every song on the album is great. Stop reading this and get your hands on this record!
Free Music Review: this album brings out the best in both artists Hit: 5 Stars
I'll keep this short, because I'm certainly no professional, just a long-time fan of Uncle Tupelo and Billy Bragg. A quick browse through these songs at the listening station and I was moved. The collaboration is simply amazing- I agree with those that say this is a labor of love. Woody would have been pleased I dare say.
Free Music Review: The Best Concept Album Hit: 5 Stars
Billy Bragg and Wilco have captured Woody Guthrie's spirit in an evocative and spare album of folk songs from America's past. The songs are so spookily perfect that you could swear ol' Woody is in the studio with the band, engineering the sound. This CD belongs in your collection. You will play it at least once a day.
