Free Music Notes for Mermaid Avenue

Free Music Review: Maybe my favourite record
Hit: 5 Stars

I think everything has been said already in the previous reviews so there's not much - or rather nothing - I can add.

All I wanted to say is that this is a very special record for me. I listen to a lot of music and own several hundred CDs but this one is really outstanding. I think that this record is really emotional but in a pleasent kind of way. A lot of songs on the album bring tears to my eyes everytime I hear them. The whole project was a great idea and one can feel that the participators put all their heart and love into it.

In short: Mermaid Avenue is one of the records that makes live worth living for me.

I'm a fan of Wilco but I love this one better than any of their studio-albums.

Hit: 5 Stars

Even if you have no appreciation for Woody Gutherie's music, this albumn is a big ole must. I know this sounds as goofy as all get out but it made me laugh, it made me cry, it left me wanting more. The songs are a spastic mix bag of throw aways that Gutherie, due in large part to ill health, never recorded. The music isn't for the most part depressionesque. The combination of Billy Bragg and Wilco gives witness to what seems to be years of collaberation. The addition of Natalie Merchant on two tracks is undeniably manna from Heaven. Would Woodie approve? Does it matter? This should be albumn of the year if you care about such things. One for the ages. One from the ages.

Free Music Review: Top Ten of 1998
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard of this CD, I thought that it sounded like an interesting idea. I was a fan of Billy Bragg's and thought his politics would fit well with Woody Guthrie's. So when I picked up the CD, imagine my surprise at what a great job Bragg and Wilco did at marrying the music to the lyrics. This album could easily have been a curiosity for Woody Guthrie fans, but it is evident that it was a labor of love for all parties involved. I was also amazed at how valid Woody Guthrie's lyrics are 50 years later. Favorite tracks are 'California Stars', 'Eisler On The Go', and 'Ingrid Bergman'. Kudos to the folks at Elektra for promoting the album as well as they did.

Free Music Review: A masterful collaboration...
Hit: 5 Stars

Better than the sum of its contributors, the 2nd song "California Stars" knocks this one out of the park. A true campfire song for the ages. If this record is a bit uneven due to the stylistic differences between Wilco and Billy Bragg, it is only a temporary feeling that a song shuffling to your taste will fix. Repeated listenings belie the depth of talent stretching from the writer to the musicians. Worth the effort to listen a bunch of times. "Way Over Yonder In A Minor Key" features unique harmony vocals from Natalie Merchant, "Hoodoo Voodoo" is as Wilco as they were. "The Unwelcome Guest" is a nice mix of all of 'em, ending the album on a somber, if powerful, note.

Free Music Review: Billy Bragg and Wilco show us the heart of folk music.
Hit: 5 Stars

Woody Guthrie left behind a legacy of songwriting that is mostly unparallelled among todays performers, and his words and messages were simple. That is why songs like "This Land Is Your Land" have become classics. To bring this kind of music fast forward, past five decades of technological and cultural advancement is exactly the burst of energy folk music needs to reaffirm its place in our shared world history of music. Billy Bragg and Wilco are to be applauded for their triumphant virtuoso turn that may bring folk music full circle for a world of enthusiasts like me, and those not yet acquainted with the simple pleasures of music for the working class.
