Free Music Notes for Mermaid AvenueFree Music Review: Don't Miss Classic ! Hit: 5 Stars
What a treat it was when I brought this one home, some albums take a few listens to before you really appreciate them but that was not the case with this one. After the first listen you'll know you've got the real thing. And what an inspired (or in retospect obvious)choice in Wilco. It now holds the record for the longest stay in the car cd changer. One great song after another,"Califionia Stars","Ingird Bergman" and so on. My six year old loves "Hesitating Beauty"and has memorized all of it's Guthrie lyrics. Great songs, music, and singing in the Gram Parsons/Buritto Brothers tradition. Not to be missed
Free Music Review: boys done good Hit: 5 Stars
finally, after 16 years of putting out records, billy bragg gets his due. he's one of the only artists alive today with the philosophical similarities to woody guthrie to put together an album such as this. goodness knows nora guthrie didn't approach him for his name to sell units. her father and billy sung about the same things: love and social inequities.add the rootsy musianship of wilco and the brew is finished. again, credit bragg with the selflessness of bringing wilco on-board instead of hoarding potential glory for himself. "mixing pop and politics..." - maybe more people know why now.
Free Music Review: Soon to become one of your favorites... trust me! Hit: 5 Stars
I've only just received Mermaid Avenue from Amazon and have listen to it once but, as with all really good albums, you just know from the first listen that this is going to be one to carry with you wherever you go. Being a big Billy Bragg fan it's not suprising to me that this album has turned out so good. If you haven't listened to Billy before then check out some of his other albums on Amazon, he may not be everyones cup of tea but I for one have not been disappointed yet with any of his albums. I could go into more detail about Mermaid Avenue but hey! listen to it yourself. What you can't make your own mind up?
Free Music Review: My vote for album of the year Hit: 5 Stars
I picked this up after hearing one of the songs on the radio, and thinking it might be worth adding to my collection. Little did I know I'd be picking up one of the finest albums I've bought in a long time. Bragg & Wilco show what fine musicians they are, and Guthries lyrics cannot be matched. My only fault with the disk is Natalie Merchants contribution, which is unusual, as I usually like what she does. Maybe it just needs time before I like it as much as the rest of the songs on the disc. Don't wait to get this one, this is music that will stand the test of time and be listened to years from now.
Free Music Review: Guthrie could not have been presented any better Hit: 5 Stars
It is pretty amazing that anyone would not like this recording.Forget the idea that these folksy tunes seem outdated by today's standards of "Hit Me One More Time" and "My Heart Will Go On", and look at the pure poetry that could only be Guthrie, as revolutionary now as it was when he walked this earth. Wilco and Billy Bragg have written tunes to these lyrics that are catchy and meaningful, notes that really capture the essence of Guthrie's messages. It is a must for music enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates music for its artistic message, rather than its sales value.Mike H
