Free Music Notes for Mermaid Avenue

Free Music Review: The best album in quite a long time.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to. By admitting to not liking this album is leaving one to the pondering as to whether or not that person actually has a soul. If, just by listening to this album, one's ears was to ACTUALLY bleed because of it's "horridness", I would think that that would be a good indicator of an important underlying medical problem that should be checked upon with the quickness. If speaking figuratively and not literaly, then another listening should be in order, this time by actually listening to it.

Free Music Review: An Awesome CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I picked up this CD for a couple of reasons, but mostly to round out my Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Son Volt collection. I heard Jeff Tweedy do "Hoodoo Voodoo" during a one-man acoustical show last year and I wasn't overwhelmed, so I had rather modest expectations of Mermaid Avenue. Also, I didn't think highly of Billy Bragg. The CD has blown me away. Both Bragg and Tweedy of Wilco have shown that they are multi-talented. I love all the songs on the CD. I am left wondering whether there will be a second CD of previously unreleased Guthrie material in the near future.

Recently, my local watering hole put this CD, which I had never heard, in their jukebox. I said "here goes" and selected the entire CD. After it was over, I played it again! This CD is a brilliant mix of musical influences and creativity, and Natalie Merchant joins in for good measure. I feel that Woody Guthrie would be proud of what BB&W have done with his unfinished works, while putting their marks on it. It's a collaborative effort from beyond the grave, but this isn't milking Guthrie's legacy, it's expanding it. And hey, Volume 2 is just as good!

Free Music Review: Eclectic and Fantastic
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a huge Wilco/Tupelo/Son Volt etc. fan. The "alt.country" is some of the best music being made today. I bought this album because of Wilco, it instantly became one of my favorite albums. "California Stars" is simply beautiful. Natalie Merchant's background singing in "Minor Key" is nothing short of heartstopping. This album is a great concept, a great collaboration and one of the best albums of the year.

For alt.country fans check out Son Volt's "Wide Swing Tremolo"- another excellent album from Jay.

Free Music Review: Instant Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

What a treat it was when i brought this one home, some albums take a few listens to before you really appreciate them but that was not the case with this one. After the first listen you'll know you've got the real thing. And what an inspired (or in retospect obvious)choice in Wilco. It now holds the record for the longest stay in the car cd changer. My six year old loves "Hesitating Beauty"and has memorized all of it's Gutherie lyrics. Great songs, music, and singing in the Gram Parsons/Buritto Brothers tradition. Not to be missed.
