Free Music Notes for Cyberpunk
Free Music Review: His best effort
Hit: 5 Stars
Panned and passed, this album gets much less credit than it deserves. Forget the stupid sticker, the multimedia, even the over-saturation of the term 'cyberpunk' itself. Just listen to the music. Yes, it's techno, but techno with the edge and purpose that techno (to me, anyway) almost never has. In Cyberpunk, Idol has taken Techno and made it his own. From the dreamy "Adam in Chains", to the fierce "Neuromancer", to the dark cover of Velvet Underground's "Heroin" (see The Velvet Underground & Nico) , to the joyous "Mother Dawn", Idol provides a broad range of sounds that are at the same time unified not just under the topic, but by mood as well.
I have to admit my fave is "Heroin". The first part of it captures a dark, dreamy despair that I admit I prefer to Reed's more matter-of-fact approach, and takes full advantage of what Steve Stevens noticed long ago, that "lovely warm voice." To me, Reed's lyrics never had it so good.
Then it accelerates into intensity, taking the listener along for the surge of the trip, accompanied by the roar of hopelessness in the Patti Smith refrain "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine!"
Yes, we go into full blast techno, but it has a *purpose* folks: it's simulating the trip in counterpoint to the lethargy of the beginning: the addict coming alive. It keeps building with a nice, driving guitar riff until the sudden comedown. To me it's a masterpiece, the kind of cover that does the same thing for the original that, say, Placebo's cover of "Running Up That Hill" (in Meds) does for Kate Bush's original (in Hounds of Love): expands it, takes it into new territory.
I see that Amazon is now offering the CD for a piddling price. Pick it up, and give it a chance. If you like rock or techno, I think you'll find something to like here, and you may, even if you don't. This music transcends.
