Free Music Notes for Movin' Out (Based on the Songs and Music of Billy Joel) (2002 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: See it first! Hit: 3 StarsThe biggest fault i have with this recording is the fact that it doesn't include the first song(Its still rock & roll to me). The Cast/Ensemble are introduced to us to this number, THEN italian restaurant is played. I agree with the person from SLC that said they were dissapointed with the intensity of this recording vis a vis the intensity of experiencing it live. Its not the artists' fault. At the time this recording was made they were still "perfecting" the show. Its the equivalent of releasing a studio demo in place of Abbey Road. I'm sure Cavanaugh et al would like to see a recording of their Broadway or even national tour be released as many of us would. My solution? I just made a double-disc of Joel's originals in the same sequence of the show(including still rock & roll to me). The show itself was 5 stars when i saw it, and i hope there's a DVD put out eventually. Listening to this isn't like listening to Les Miz, Cats, etc. Tharp's amazing choreography is so involved that only a trained dancer would be able to remember exactly what was going on throughout each number. If the powers that be, read these reviews, GET A DVD OUT THERE FOR US!!!
Free Music Review: Could've been better Hit: 3 StarsWell, I haven't seen the show yet, so I can't quite comment on how this album encapsules the feel of it, but for what it is, it is done very well. I was actually expecting this recording to have a more "Broadway" feel, that is, Billy's songs mangled into big-show numbers. All I needed to hear was the saxophone in "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" and the whistling at the beginning of "The Stranger" to realize that this was not the case. Not only was the feel of the song kept constant, but the songs were not touched whatsoever. Which was kind of a bad thing. One thing nice about someone's music being covered is that the new artists injects a different perspective into the music. But this album is very bland, it just feels like someone singing Billy Joel songs exactly the way Billy sings them. He sings them all way, mind you, but this album is needless. It well-done and well-produced and all, but if you already own a Billy Joel Greatest Hits CD, or have his albums, there's no reason to buy this CD. Except for "We Didn't Start The Fire." That was just plain terrible. If that's their idea of a new take on a song, then I'm glad they didn't touch the songs at all.
Free Music Review: What??? Hit: 2 StarsThis album is simply a list of BJ's songs sung by an imatator. Michael Cavanaugh does have a great voice and could do a GREAT job on an album that has ORIGINAL tracks on it. He just didn't live up to BJ's originals. If you liked, or want, these songs on a CD, buy a greatest hits CD. Don't bother with this album, buy a BJ greatest hits and wait for a Michael Cavanaugh original CD. It really is the best way to go.I haven't seen the Broadway production yet, so maybe the songs are better on that.
Free Music Review: Loved the show, Album sucked. Not Live from Broadway. Hit: 1 StarsTwo weeks ago, I saw the show Movin Out. I loved the entire production. I felt the music and the choreography were fabulous, the dancers were beyond excellent. My daughter bought the album on Amazon since it cost $25.00 at the theater. When we played it on our high end stereo system, it was horribly muted, compressed and Michael Cavananugh's voice was pushed to the background. When we were in the theater, each song he sang had soul, punch and wonderful delivery. Not so on this album. It is almost as if it was from a totally different show. In fact, it was! The "Live" performance was done at the pre-Broadway opening in Chicago. That was the first mistake. The second was the way the CD was mixed, losing the dynamics of the band and the singing. Perhaps Mr. Cavanaugh had not yet gotten into the "role" that he was playing/singing when recorded in 2002. By 2003, watching the show, he was more than comfortable with each song. He projected the each song with the right amount of delivery which helped to create the mood, and storyline for this amazing musical ballet. I hope the Producers of the show will realize that this "old live" version does not represent the true dynamics of the show as it is on Broadway; that they will release a new, better version of this great show, which will highlight the wonderful job done by Mr. Cavanaugh.
