Free Music Notes for Movin' Out (Based on the Songs and Music of Billy Joel) (2002 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: GREAT CD! Great Broadway Show! Hit: 4 StarsI just saw this production 48 hours ago and cannot tell you how much I enjoyed it. The use of Billy Joel's music to convey a story was brilliant! I knew after hearing the music I just had to have the CD. My only complaint is that I wish is was more of a "live version". In the begining you hear the clapping of those at the Rodgers Theatre - but then the music appears to have been from a recording studio. That was my only disapointment as the opening musical number was much more alive when I saw it in person. Michael Cavanaugh is wonderful!
Free Music Review: woww Hit: 5 Starsi have 3 complaints about this one... the new edition of "we didn't start the fire" was dissapointing, and it leaves out "new york state of mind", and "it's still rock and roll to me." I still give it five stars because the music is still incredible and my memories of seeing the show a few days ago are just THAT good. I'm reccomending the music as well as the show. as a postscript, you must see the show if you can. its indescribable.
Free Music Review: Awesome On Broadway = Awesome CD!! Hit: 5 StarsThese Billy Joel songs will be forever on Broadway... I saw the show and it was awesome!! the story was real, the choreography was great, and the music was brilliant... KUDOS to Billy, Twyla, Cast, Musicians, and Crew.. :-)
Free Music Review: "Movin' Out" Leaves Out Too Much Hit: 3 StarsI recently saw this show in New York City, and was impressed by the orchestrations (which won a Tony award), and, of course, by the athletic and endlessly inventive choreography (another Tony). The CD is good, but opts for shortened versions of many songs (am I wrong here?) that seemed longer in live performance. Hey, the orchestrations won a Tony! Let's hear them in their entirety. One spectacular number is omitted entirely from the CD, the Overture, "It's Still Rock 'n' Roll to Me."Having said this, however, the album still generates lots of heat when it needs to, and shows its gentler, lyrical side too.
Free Music Review: Excellent Hit: 5 StarsWhen I first heard of the whole concept of "Movin' Out" - a ballet using the songs of Billy Joel played and sung by someone who is not Billy Joel- I thought it was a pretty stupid idea. I thought it was a cheap way to make money off of a great songwriter, performer, and his masterpieces. However, I listened to the CD, and while it does not take the place of Billy Joel (as nothing ever could), it is excellent in its own right. The songs are all wonderful, and are performed with energy and exceptional musicianship. The songs are so loyal to Billy's own versions (he did orchestrate them) but the performers give a little bit of their own character to the music. (My only complaint is this arrangement of "We Didn't Start the Fire"). Michael Cavanaugh, the pianist/lead singer, is amazing. His voice is incredible and soulful; he puts all of his heart into the music. His pianistic skills are flawless - listen to "Prelude" and you'll know what I mean. The other musicians are fabulous as well, and were handpicked by Billy Joel himself. I saw this musical on Broadway and was very pleased. I think it's better than London's "We Will Rock You" (based on the songs of Queen)and Broadway's "Mamma Mia" (based on the songs of Abba) in that the whole cast does not sing and the arrangements are not for a stage chorus. Rather, the one guy and his piano backed up by the band is as close to Billy Joel as anyone will get.
