Free Music Notes for 2000 Years: Millennium ConcertFree Music Review: Wonderful...especially for the lesser-known songs. Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this double-CD in the Amazon Marketplace a couple months ago, and it's been playing on my iPod nearly every day since then. I LOVE it. And I've been surprised to find myself liking the lesser-known songs best! In particular, "Summer Highland Falls" and "2000 Years" are wonderful. Both of them put you in that front-porch, rocking-chair, glass-of-lemonade-and-a-sunset kind of mood.
Amazon's reviewer does make some good points, though. Billy's chatter at the end of most tracks can get annoying, but I don't think it's a deal-breaker. And it's fixable, too. If you use iTunes, you can change the start/end times (right-click the song, click "get info," and choose the Options tab). If you don't use iTunes (and the song's in an mp3 format), you can use Audacity to trim off any parts you don't want.
Once you do that, this double CD set is absolutely delightful. I haven't gotten sick of it yet, and I've been listening to it almost every day!
Free Music Review: In Defense of Piano Man Hit: 5 Stars
This album has been widely criticized simply because the track list does not include "Piano Man." Anyone who has seen Billy Joel perform should know that "Piano Man" is not a song that can be properly captured on a live album. It's too powerful. Everyone knows the song and everyone sings every word. The crowd noise entirely drowns out Billy's music and vocals. To be a part of that is completely overwhelming; A CD cannot deliver the same experience. The only real good live versions of "Piano Man" come from the 70's, before the whole world knew the song. The Milenium concert is an outstanding collection of Billy Joel classics, along with a few slightly lesser known tunes. "Big Man on Mulberry Street," and "I've Loved These Days" are especially powerful. The album doesn't have a single bad track. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!
Free Music Review: A great concert but where the hell is Piano Man Hit: 5 Stars
I recently saw Billy Joel in concert along with the other great Piano Man Elton John. That night in Kansas City those two gave an awesome performance. This concert was just like his performance at that show. He does have a lot of his hits like "Only the Good Die Young", "River of Dreams", "We Didn't Start the Fire", "My life", and "Big Shot" All of these performances are strong and they hold up well. There is one major flaw, Piano Man was not included in this set. I don't imagine Billy Joel can do a concert celebrating the new millennium without doing Piano Man. Where is it? Who was the [genious] that decided not to include it in the album? The concert is still incredible though and Billy Joel didn't dissapoint. I would recomend this to any Rock and Roll fan.
Free Music Review: A welcome and rare live album spanning a monumental career Hit: 5 Stars
With the noted exception of a disc of live recordings in his Box Set, Billy Joel hasn't released any live material since his Russian album from the 80s. A second live CD from BJ is long overdue. He performed a fresh, lively concert, and the album is deliciously crisp. Fans will appreciate some musings on his future and career, and casual listeners can enjoy this insanely energetic 25-track compilation. Even though you may have wanted to be there, it's not a case of "you had to be there" to enjoy this release. I've heard these songs before, over and over and over again, but there's an added vivacity here that makes this a worthwhile addition to my complete collection.
Free Music Review: This is fantastic - buy it! Hit: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic album - buy it. Joel gets better with age, and his live versions of songs like My Life, Movin' Out, Billy the Kid, and 2000 years are phenominal (they are much better than the album versions of these songs). The cover of Honky Tonk Women is a real treat. I wish the record company hadn't cut Piano Man, And So it Goes, This is the Time, and Miami 2017 from the recording, but still I love the album - buy it! The amazon.com review of the cds is totally off-base. For Joel fans, the commentary included on the album is precious. Furthermore, anyone who has seen Joel perform within the last years can tell that he clearly has not run out of steam.
