Free Music Notes for 2000 Years: Millennium Concert

Free Music Review: A nice addition to the colllection.
Hit: 4 Stars

This album nicely captures the essence of attending a Billy Joel show (which is an experience that may not be available to the masses anymore, if you believe Billy). On his last tour, Billy joked that he briefly considered naming it the "Old 'Bleep' Tour." You might call this the Old 'Bleep' Live Album." And what really does make it is the old stuff on the album. If you haven't heard Billy perform "Big Shot" live, it's a real treat, and it's captured well here although nothing approaches the actual in-concert version. "Billy the Kid," "Movin' Out," and "You May Be Right" are among other highlights. "Stiletto" and "Captain Jack" are missing, but you'll find them on his other live albums. Overall, this is a treat. Even though it doesn't break any new ground, it will take you back.

Free Music Review: Classic Joel concert, captured well
Hit: 4 Stars

I have seen Billy Joel three times, the first in 1976 at a small upstate NY college; the latest this past Sunday with Elton John. This recording captures a classic Joel concert, banter and all. The music is played with a fire he only seems to muster in front of a hometown crowd and the banter is what sets a Joel concert apart from those bands that merely replay their songs.

Joel has the knack of pulling in the audience and forming a connection through his banter. It gives a glimpse of himself. This past Sunday he used it to explain his writing of classical music and he riffed some of it as well. You'll get that same feeling with this CD.

It is not the CD to listen to if you are new to hearing Joel music. Go to Turnstiles, Streetlife Serenade, or Piano Man for that. But to get the true feel of a performer who excels in front of an audience, try this one out!

Free Music Review: Joel Cut Short.
Hit: 4 Stars

Any one who knows me, knows I am a huge Billy Joel fan. This live album with loved songs and a clear recording is great! The Millennium Concert was 3 hours plus and this double CD set is a drop over 2 hours. At this concert you heard songs he doen't play live often and was really a treat for those who were there. But these songs were removed. Souvenier, Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway), This is the Time, ect.. And how can you cut out Piano Man? Not only is Joel known as "The Piano Man" but he ends the show with this and he goes back and forth with the crowd. This is really a lot of fun. Will you like the album? Yes, a great album for even a casual Billy Joel fan. Could it have been more? Yes!

Free Music Review: Not Billy Joel's Best Live Album, But Still Quite Good
Hit: 4 Stars

If this is Billy Joel's last pop album, then it surely is a fine way to go. Joel's voice has lost some of its range, but he is quite convincing as an interpreter of early songs such as "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", "Angry Young Man", and "New York State Of Mind". It's also a pleasure hearing some of his old band mates performing along with him, most notably drummer Liberty De Vito (name is misspelled on the album cover), saxophonist and musical jack of all trades Mark Rivera, and saxophonist Rich Cannata. The sound quality is quite superb. Unfortunately, it captures too much of Joel's onstage patter and not enough music. Still, this is a CD I strongly recommend to Billy Joel fans.

Free Music Review: Great CD, but just one thing missing
Hit: 4 Stars

If you've seen Joel live, you'll love this CD. All the classics are here and the sound is fantastic. You can hear the crowd singing along on several numbers which just adds to the overall "live" effect.

The biggest disappointment however is the omission of Joels' signature song "Piano Man". As most Joel fans can attest, this song played live is one massive sing-along. Not including it is sacrilige. If you want that one song live, you'll have to buy the Joel boxset, which might have been part of the reason.

With over 2 hours of hits such as My Life, Only the Good Die Young, and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant; this CD is a can't miss.
