Free Music Review: Goosebumps and Tears
Hit: 4 Stars

Just received the deluxe set today. I've watched parts of the DVD including the new interview. The interview is excellent, especially the comments from the legendary Phil Ramone. Watched some of the Old Grey Whistle test, and that was fine, also.

But, first off, I listened to the 2nd CD with the June 1977 Carnegie Hall concert. I must say I listened the old fashioned way, with high quality headphones, and I must say I was getting goosebumps and I also had a few tears as I flashed back in my mind to 1977 and listening the The Stranger for the first few times on my first high quality hi-fi. I had been a sort of Billy Joel fan previous to The Stranger, but The Stranger became the benchmark of all Billy Joel albums and still is.

The remastering of this over thirty year old concert is amazing. The small orchestra backing is just enough to make a difference. I also noticed the dynamics of the way bands played back then. These days it seems like it's pedal to the metal the whole song. No dynamics.

I have Songs in the Attic (excellent),the Soviet Union concert, the Millenium concert, and the recent 12 Gardens all on CD. This 1977 concert blows them all away in my humble opinion. Reminded me of the Bruce Springsteen concert on the Born to Run deluze edition from a few years ago. So much energy. I'm thinking it has something to do with still being young and hungry. I remember thinking that when I watched the old Springsteen 1975 concert.

Anyway, do yourself a favor. If you are any kind of Billy Joel fan from the old days, you owe it to yourself to enjoy this concert from 1977. And listen to it close. Not just as background music. Billy Joel was also an amazing piano player, and the band complimented him perfectly.

Hopefully, we are able to get some new Billy Joel rock & roll music yet. It's been too long between albums and I'd love to hear something new from Billy.

Free Music Review: Decent box set but...
Hit: 4 Stars

I think the OGWT performance should've been included in "My Lives".

This isn't as massive as the Pearl Jam reissue, but includes a journal and a poster of the Carnegie Hall concert which was pretty cool.

The documentary is pretty short, I just watched Springsteen's "Born to Run" and fortunately there was a lot filmed and video recorded. This was a short doc on the making of and once you've seen it, that's it.

I guess there must have been a coin toss between which show they were going to include, the live at Nassau radio concert, or the Carnegie Hall recording. I know there's complaints about some songs cut out (not sure which ones), but I think the listener should be putting it up against "Songs in the Attic" (hopefully will get a Legacy overhaul), because there are songs here that aren't on there. It's nice to have "Prelude/Angry Young Man" live. It does have a healthy dose of "Turnstiles" plus a great "Captain Jack". "She's Got A Way" and "The Entertainer", but strangely no "Piano Man".

Billy hasn't played theaters in ages and it just makes you wish he would have kept playing theater shows here and there, even at his commercial zenith in the 80s.

There's a lot they could've included, demos, a couple of other concerts that were recorded around the same time (even Muzikladen footage should've been included) but for someone who wants to see and hear him and the band playing songs like "Scenes" to people who hadn't heard it yet, this is worth getting.

I,ve been a Billy Joel fan, for quite some time now. Actually, I,m a big music fan period. This is the first time I,ve bought anything from Amazon. I bought this collection used for less than twenty dollars. New, this thing is like forty five. What I got was three discs in great condition, no scratches, no skips, I,m impressed. The collection itself. The only downside is the fact that the sound quality on both the dvds and cds is not outstanding. But the behind the scenes, and early concert footage, of a young Billy Joel, makes up for the shortcomings. Must have for any Billy Joel fan. Enjoy!
