Free Music Review: Classic.... minor comments...

There's something about "Turnstiles", "The Stranger" and "52nd Street" that sound cohesive back to back. I think that having included some of these songs on "Songs in the Attic" indicates that Billy felt that this album, as it would have the now-classic "New York State Of Mind" and "Angry Young Man" had been overshadowed by the latter two albums.
He starts off with "Say Goodbye to Hollywood", his self-imposed Exile on Sunset Blvd, and it has the Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" isms to it. Ronnie Spector would later cover this song.
Next is "Summer Highland Falls", one of the nicest ballads he's ever done, although an ode to boredom it seems. "All You Wanna Do Is Dance" is in the style Paul Simon had been doing around that time, and it's one I could take or leave.
What's left to be said about "New York State of Mind"? He conjures Ray Charles up in this one. I don't know if Ray ever covered it (they would work together years later), but Streisand, Mel Torme, and Tony Bennett have, and after 9/11, took on a new life. The unofficial anthem for New York.
"James" is a nice ballad, but "Angry Young Man" is a concert classic, memorable by Joel pounding on his keys like a madman.
"I've Loved These Days" is Joel's twisted "Auld Lang Syne" circa mid-70s, ending in the apocolyptic "Miami 2017" (possibly influenced by Springsteen's "Jungleland"), an arena rock song that took on a whole new meaning at the "Concert for NYC" in 2001, but pointed out that they were still there, and that version has become the definitive one.
Criticisms:
I think that all of Joel's "official" catalog should've avoided the "Enhanced CD" altogether (or at least included archive footage versus the still unreleased on DVD "Live From Long Island") and instead put them out in the "Legacy" edition. The strength in Billy Joel's music has always come out in the live shows.
For this particular album, there are alternate takes in existance as well as a show taped from the Bottom Line for radio. The live shows he did in the 70s had manic energy if you've ever heard them, and played as if his life depended on it, which isn't captured as well on this album. He had also appeared on a TV special called "Tonight" as well as appearing on Mike Douglas around the same time. This is great stuff that should be available.
As Billy is retired from putting new music out, it would be great to see his body of work turned into CD/DVD combo "Legacy Editions" for young (who have discovered him via the "Movin Out" musical) and old fans alike, and the video collection covering more of the earlier songs and rare footage that few have actually seen. After picking up the Jeff Buckley "Grace" Legacy Edition and Billie Holiday's "Ultimate Collection", both of which contain some great songs as well as a DVD worth its weight, it would be great if Billy Joel put something like that out that did his catalog justice in years to come, and be worth it to the older fans that continue to love his music.
