Free Music Review: Billy Joel's Tribute To His Home State

As a life-long resident of New York City, "Turnstiles" has special meaning to me. Almost every song on this album is directly or indirectly related to Billy Joel's return to his home town after living in California for three years. And the music is great! "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" is a great tribute to the Phil Spector "Wall Of Sound" music production technique. "New York State Of Mind" is Joel's love song to his home. "Prelude/Angry Young Man" is a great hard rocker with a blistering piano intro and "Miami 2017" is another terrific hard rock anthem. My favorite song on this album may very well be the ballad "Summer, Highland Falls" with it's moving lyrics and gorgeous piano melody. All in all, "Turnstiles" is essential listening for anyone interested in Billy Joel's music.

On this 1976 classic, Billy Joel tempers his anger a bit, adding dashes of hope and even sentimentality. In fact, he seems to address this fresh outlook on the scathing "Angry Young Man" and defiant "Say Goodbye to Hollywood." Still, his ballads here mark some of his finest work, from the Ray Charles-influenced "New York State of Mind" to the introspective "Summer, Highland Falls" to the celebratory "I've Loved These Days." Lyrically, "Miami 2017" owes as much to folk as it does to rock. These eight songs seem as if they're therapeutic for Joel: they display a new comfort and satisfaction as he digs deeper within himself to find lyrical themes. --Marc GreilsamerPop Music CDs
