Bjork found the world most of us live in to be boring and oppressive ... so she created her own.
She's not a rebel who ignores "the rules"; I don't think she even knows what "the rules" are. She's an intuitive, instinctual creature, following her own muse. Somehow along the way she's been able to attain fame and mainstream success, but it never seems to really affect her. She can work with hit-making producer Timbaland (who recently helped turn Nelly Furtado into a mainstream artist) and simply use his inventive beats to add fuel to her iconic fire. "Innocence" is easily one of the album's best tracks, but I don't see it playing on TRL anytime soon. Bjork's most wonderful quality might be her ability to combine a bold need for revolution with unrestrained joy. On "Declare Independence", she strikes a punk pose. Anarchy never felt so cuddly.
Free Music Review: Always innovative, always surprising, always a pleasure. Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not going to belabor this review by analyzing every song. Suffice it to say that I am in awe of Bjork's ability to make the music that she wants to make without worry over whether it will be commercially successful. The fact that she is constantly exploring new musical terrain stands as testament to the fact that she is a musical artist and not one of the gaggle of "singers" who rely on hype to sell their wares. Do I think that this is a truly great CD? Yes... I do. I will add that it is best listened to as a whole and not as sampled tracks. What on the surface seems not at all cohesive is decidely so when taken in as recorded and sequenced.
Is this as good as "Homogenic"? "Post"? "Medulla"? "Debut"? "Vespertine"? Funny, but I never questioned whether "A Starry Night" was as good as "Sunflowers".
Free Music Review: If it weren't divisive, it wouldn't be fantastic. Hit: 5 Stars
I won't mince words in pretentious grasps for eloquence.
But I will say this: Björk's knack for soaringly, wrenchingly playful and emotive vocals atop subtle, glacial backdrops only gets deeper.
Her vision is as strongly refined as ever, with the "exotic" variety of players and instruments and intuitively stomping beats she has set up to float these songs upon.
It's extremely exciting, never cheap, and consistently rewarding, revealing multifaceted intents and layers with repeated listening.
If it seems "boring" at first, just wait until you really start to taste the textures of primal horns, volcanic beats, and eastern flutters.
For everything to discover, it leaves you with something about which to wonder. If that's not meaningful art, then nothing is.
Free Music Review: Always Different Hit: 5 Stars
I love Bjork's music overall, but I have always noticed something about it: It usually takes 3 listenings or so for me to really start enjoying it. Bjork is so very creative that each time she comes out with a new album, you never know what to expect! I bought this cd just yesterday and I have listened to it a few times now, and I can say this this is an awesome album! Timbaland produced two tracks and had a hand in a third, these are my favorite songs because his production adds a new sort of pop dimention, and her voice is so beautiful on those songs. I hope they do more together in the future. I found elements of Post and Homogenic, with a little bit of Vespertine on one of the songs as well. Overall, I recommend this album with 5 stars! Keep it up Bjork, you just keep pushing the envelope more every time!
Free Music Review: Beautiful Album Hit: 5 Stars
On the last album she experimented with the human voice as an instrument all its own. On this album she expirements with horns, Asian harmonies, and driving rythms to produce another outstanding piece of work. Every Bjork album requires repeated listening to really appreciate the amazing artistry of this very talented musician. I don't understand why other reviewers are so quick to criticize this album. Like every other Bjork album, this one will grow on you. In my opinion Bjork has transcended the realm of pop music to become a pure artist. This album reminds me a lot of Peter Gabriel's Security. It is more like a painting of sound rather than a collection of songs. Bjork has broken all the rules and created another masterpiece. This is a beautiful album if given a chance.
