Free Music Notes for Live at the Greek

Free Music Review: Two generations of blues rock, one tight live album.
Hit: 5 Stars

Fans of Led Zeppelin or fans of The Black Crowes, and certainly those who are fans of both, should buy this album immediately. I understand the fear... I had it, too. Who could ever top Zeppelin? Who could possibly do justice to the canon in cover form? And in the "modern" era, what would happen if the incredible saviors-of-rock Crowes were to try to recreate something as mythological as Led Zeppelin that had at the same time been dead for thirty years?

And so... I avoided this release for two full years.

It was finally hearing the live version of Ten Years Gone on a friend's sound system that did it for me. After spending more than a few minutes to collect myself (and playing the track again... and again... and again), I knew that my next purchase would be Live at the Greek.

Not to worry, your fears (as were mine) are unfounded; you won't be upset by thin, embarrassing Zeppelin covers, nor will you find The Black Crowes struggling to be Celtic gods and coming off as pretentious as you've always known they weren't. What you will be is STUNNED at how incredible, how fresh, and how thick all of these classics sound.

In fact, Chris Robinson's voice brings a whole new depth to some of the songs. What Is and What Should Never Be is made anew, earthy and worldly. Ten Years Gone, while still a heartbreaking tune, also becomes a deeper lament, with more soul than the studio Zeppelin version. In My Time of Dying becomes dirtier, harder, more challenging. Even Yardbirds tracks like Shape of Things to Come are as fresh as they've ever sounded. I'm as big a fan of Robert Plant as anyone, but I'll be damned if these tunes haven't been ENHANCED by being played... Live at the Greek.

Free Music Review: Rock music at it's finest
Hit: 5 Stars

It is a well known fact that, when performed by the best, rock music is best experienced live. And folks, these guys are the best of the best, and prove it on this album. The Black Crowes, voted "Most Rock 'N' Roll band" by Rolling Stones, team up with guitar GOD Jimmy Page to put out the hardest hitting rock album of the year. First off, this has GOT to be the best sounding, most well-mixed live album I have ever heard. The sound engineers should be given BIG props for this one. The whole band sounds absolutely HUGE, as if they're 20 feet tall (unlike the next closest thing to this album, The Song Remains The Same, which features a very thin sounding Zeppelin recording.), and all the guitars (Page, Rich Robinson, the most underrated guitarist of our time, and Audley Freed) are high in the mix, since they are, indeed, the highlight of the show. Page is on fire the whole show, performing incredible solos on Heartbreaker (especially when the rest of the band comes in... TONS of power there), Oh Well, etc. But the highlight of the show, to me, is Ten Years Gone. On this track, Page finally realizes his creation in it's entire glory live onstage, with the aid of two other guitarists. This version absolutely blows away the studio version (and any Zep bootleg versions you may have heard) with it's triple-headed guitar assault. Chris Robinson does a fine job on all the songs, not trying to sound like Plant but doing his own thing within the limits of the songs. Overall, a must buy.

Free Music Review: Misinformed
Hit: 5 Stars

How to not offend? That's tough. After looking over several reviews of this recording, I find many people comparing James Patrick Page to Jimmy Page. He spent many years (27 to be exact) to make a compilation of his Zeppelin works. Also in comparison are Chris Robinson and Robert Plant. Hmm...seems so small. How do you compare blues artists? Chris Robinson, in his own right, is an outstanding blues vocalist as is Robert Plant. Jimmy Page, as well as Willie Dixon, are both vintage guitar players. Chris Robinson has accomplished what most people have strived for, and that is playing with the "great" Jimmy Page. Stop all the teenage whining. Chris Robinson never tried to be anything more than the Crowes vocalist. Robert Plant is not offended and nor should you be. In a nut shell, this is a fabulous recording. Perhaps greater than "The Song Remains the Same," in that, "not to offend," Jimmy Page has finally found a group of musicians who can make the mark.

Now that I have your attention, Jimmy Page has finally found a band worthy of recording Led Zeppelin material. And if you have not previously noted, Jimmy Page has used over-dubbing in many of the earlier recordings...In fact, all the recordings. Now, does it not serve him well to be able to exercise that "over-dub" into a live act? The recording allows Jimmy to perform beyond the norm.

Free Music Review: This CD is A Must Own for Rock Fans!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was lucky enough to be present at the show this cd is a recording of. All I can say is that I am so glad they made it because it gets better every time i listen to it - and I certainly don't remember evry last detail from the show so it was very considerate of Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes to record this!

The Black Crowes show here they are one of the most underrated rock n roll bands EVER. Chris Robinson is way more than credible filling in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin numbers and he meshes naturally with Page on the covers and Crowes songs. I expected him to be good and Page is in fine form flawlessly recreating the Zeppelin glory, and showing true musicianship on the blues covers included here. Page is really deserving of his accolades. But once again I expected that.

What I hear every time I listen that I DIDN't expect is how excellent and downright righteous the band is. These guys can just flat out play and they are to me on a level with the E Street Band for their musical versatility, funkiness, and rock solid renditions of old and new material. I don't know about you, but as a guitarist myself, I would never want to solo AFTER Jimmy Page, and Rich Robinson steps up to the plate and delivers on this count. The whole band does. I love this collection, probably more because I was there, but if you like ROCK music you will love this too. It's great.

Free Music Review: my favorite live album
Hit: 5 Stars

I came to the album as a huge Zep fan and a person who liked the Black Crowes but wasn't too familiar with them beyond their hits. I came away with a great appreciation with the Black Crowes. One of the most overlooked facets of Led Zeppelin was how subtle some of their music was in places. For example, John Bonham, who will always be sorely missed, could do so many little things on the drums. The Black Crowes are extremely talented and provide a lot of umph (that's a technical term) I haven't heard since Appetite for Destruction.

The selection of songs is wonderful. A lot of Zeppelin songs one doesn't hear too much on the radio. Besides "Whole Lotta Love" and "Heartbreaker", these are the Zep songs I love but don't get overplayed. The raw energy in their performances is evident. Jimmy Pages has his licks back. He sounds like a man rejuvinated by his mates on the project. The old blues tunes come off well and are fun. I am especially fond of the rocking version of Oh Well, which was a Fleetwood Mac tune.

This album just plain rocks. I miss hearing good guitaring so badly in today's whiny post-grunge, alternative world, and this sorely fills that need. Buy it if you love fun, rocking music.
