Free Music Notes for Live at the GreekFree Music Review: a near religious moment... Hit: 5 Stars
i grew up a big led zeppelin fan, but because of my age i missed led zeppelins hey day...so i enjoyyed them through thier albums, film{ "the song remains the same} and books { hammer of the gods}, wondering what it would be like to see them live. then in november of '99 i got my chance...jimmy page and the black crows were to play the worcester centrum centre...only 1 of 2 shows in america, the other in l.a. . the concert lived up to all my expectations and more, it was almost a religiuos experience...seeing jimmy page duck and move around the stage as he did in " the song remains the same".i as well as everyone else there were completely blown away by the performance. chris robertson did more than fill robert plants shoes..he brought new life to songs that i only knew from studio tracks, and the rest of the black crows did every song its justice..every time i listen to this cd set..i relive that night, in all its glory. if you consider your self a led zeppelin fan..this is a must...its more than a must its an absolute must..for eveyone else its a must...this cd set proves real rock and roll is still king...and todays bands and music better bow in its presence.
Free Music Review: Even better than the real thing? Hit: 5 Stars
Classic clasic classic. Any zep fan would love this. Any music fan will love this. Tracks such as "In my time of dying" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" are as good if not better than the originals.I have to admit I am not a big Crowes fan. They have some great songs, but I found it difficult to really get into them. This album has everything a live rock album should though. It's beefy, loud, aggressive, rough, and almost leaves you out of breath as they wind up "Whole Lotta Love". The zep songs sprinkled with Peter Green tracks are a joy to listen to. Page, although laboured in some parts, still has that fat Les Paul sound. Any zep fan instantly knows his licks. The crowes do a great job in getting the live sound just right. Songs, which Page would have found difficult to play live at his prime, come off as they were supposed to sound...kickin'. For all those zep fans who were waiting for "the live album", this more than matches up. Push "The song remains the same" to the back of your collection. Get Page & the Crowes (and the BBC Sessions Live). Keep it up Jimmy. An education in live music.
Free Music Review: Whole lotta talent, whole lotta music Hit: 5 Stars
When this album first came out, it had several strikes against it in my book: first, the album was comprised of classic tunes remade by someone else. Second, the album was comprised of classic tunes remade by one of their original creators long after the fact. Finally,it's a live album, and live albums rarely either provide good sound quality or recapture the excitement of a live show. And I'm a longtime fan of both Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes. But I was very, very wrong. First, the excitement and sound quality are definitely there. Kevin Shirley's production and mixing are top notch --- almost as if the man had master producer Jimmy Page looking over his shoulder the entire time. Second, the renditions of the old Zep tunes accomplish the near-impossible task of being both faithful to the original (Chris Robinson makes an eerily dead-on Robert Plant) and standing on the quality of their own musicianship. Finally, the partnership of Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes is brilliant. The chemistry is powerful, and the musicianship, both individually and collectively, is mindblowing. My only regret is not having been in L.A. to catch the show!
Free Music Review: An astonishing reprise of Led Zeppelin! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD will knock you out of your seat!
I don't know who had the great sense to record and market this fantastic live performance but they should be awarded both a Nobel and a Pulitzer. Just listen to the first track ("Celebration Day") and you'll have a sense of the entire brilliant work.
Here we see combined a lot of cuts from both Led Zeppelin II and III, two of my three favorite classic rock albums of all time, by these masters of rock and, WOW, what a ride! There are also cuts from other great Led Zeppelin albums.
The beauty of the songs found herein is that the band/singers stayed VERY close to the original sounds and guitar riff techniques. You'll swear that you're listening to Led Zeppelin in their early days when you hear the guttral, raw essence of these songs. I've been a guitar player for 40 years and this is some very fine work.
I don't buy a lot of live performance albums, especially recent releases, but this one is a big exception to that rule. You can't listen to this one soon enough, folks!

Free Music Review: To be a rock and to roll! Hit: 5 Stars
Jimmy Page playing subpar can still play rings around a lot of other guitar players, and he's anything BUT subpar on this terrific live CD. I managed to go through most of the 90s almost completely oblivious to the Black Crowes, so I didn't really know what to expect, though I hoped Chris Robinson wasn't going to try and shamelessly copy Robert Plant the way David Coverdale did on his 1993 team-up with Page. Well, this pairing works great! The Led Zep covers may mostly stick to the originals, but they cook partly because Robinson sings his ... off without much more than a cursory nod to Plant's stylizations. They also work because the rest of the band back the two frontmen to the hilt, and because these covers are counterbalanced by other covers, including great versions of B.B King's "Woke Up This Morning," the old Yardbirds/Jeff Beck cruncher, "Shapes Of Things," and, whodathunk, Peter Green's "Oh Well, Part 1." Of the Zep stuff, "Nobody's Fault But Mine," "In My Time Of Dying" and "Custard Pie" particularly stand out, but everything here has something that keeps you glued to the CD player. Try this; it's a smoker!
