Free Music Notes for LionsFree Music Review: Black Crowes get their groove back! Hit: 5 Stars
After 1999's disappointing "By Your Side", the Black Crowes come through with a gem in "Lions". The album opens with the feedback intro of "Midnight From The Inside Out". "Lickin'", the album's first single, has a real groove to it, courtesy of the distorted riff provided by guitarist Rich Robinson. The album contains three great ballads, "Losing My Mind", "Miracle To Me", and "Lay It All On Me". These songs highlight the beautiful and passionate voice of lead singer Chris Robinson. Other album highlights include the funky "Ozone Mama", "Young Man, Old Man", "Cypress Tree", and the joyful and uplifting "Soul Singin'". Overall, this album is right on par with the Crowes' other masterpieces, "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" and "Amorica". The band seems to have everything going in the right direction for them nowadays. The album sounds more like the experimental and varied music of Led Zeppelin as compared to the straight ahead rock and roll music of the Faces and Humble Pie. This shows that the Crowes are evolving and experimenting with their sound. Go out and buy this album if you're a fan of the Black Crowes or just enjoy great rock and roll music. You should not be disappointed.

...including Hendrix, Zappa, James Brown, Stones, George Clinton, and many others can be heard influencing this album, which is never imitative but always unique and very spiritual, with references from Milton and Dante to William Blake and Sitting Bull's dance prior to Custer's Last Stand. From the screeching feedback that introduces "Midnight from the Inside Out", les freres robinson can be scary, nasty-hot ("Lickin') the ultimate putdown artists (No Use Lyin') and still breathe monstrous life into a little funky thang y'all ("Ozone mama"). The soul journey that seems to begin on "Greasy Grass River" flows though Electric Ladyland and creates a veritable Stairway to Heaven, and we are dropped in the water, freed, redeemed, and blessed..."Soul Singing", "Cosmic Friend" mix funk and rhythm and blues with psychedelia, as someone else has mentioned, wandering into a Sly Stone-like brilliance, but much modernized and somehow ethereal while heavy at the same time. Wow. Very impressed. These fellows are certainly masters of their craft, and also OUT THERE with Don Was, who really knows how to open up a studio recording. (Check out Brian Wilson's "I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"--I mean the album from the mid-80's, not the Pet Sounds song.) Where have I been? I needed this album back in 2001! I gotta lotta catchin up to do!
Free Music Review: THE BLACK CROWES' MIGHTY ROAR! Hit: 5 Stars
"Lions" is perhaps the Crowes strongest effort since "the Southern Harmony & Musical Companion." In my opinion, it is the Crowes' best yet! Instead of the band doing a retro sound of their own past, the Crowes move full force ahead, creating fine melody & music, ignoring what the masses expect to hear, as well as those old flames still stuck on the sound of "Shake Your Moneymaker." This album is for the fans & for anyone who appreciates good ROCK music. Any devoted Crowe fan might respect the fact that the band has kept its loyalty in not selling out & still remain as clever in their riffs as their debut. No..."Lions" is not a sell-out effort by the Crowes. The proof? Listen to how much air play this fabulous album has received! Thank-you media for preserving this gem. In the lack of radio overplay (thank-god), every listen to this album remains as fresh as the last, from the hard-rocking intro, "Midnight from the Inside Out," to the melodic-rich ballad of "Losing My Mind" (a must hit repeat on the CD player!). There is not a song skipper on this album, which is rare these days. The sample sound clips available on Amazon are just a taste of perhaps the best "rock" album of the decade. The Robinson brothers do it again!
Free Music Review: Excellent. The Crowes' best since "Amorica". Hit: 5 Stars
Lions, the Black Crowes' 6th album, ranks up there among their best. After releasing three wonderful studio albums in the early 90's, "Shake Your Money Maker" (1990), "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" (1992) and Amorica (1994), the Crowes released two lesser albums. The uneven, experimental "Three Snakes and One Charm" (1996) and the hard-rocking but not entirely satisfying "By Your Side" (1999). Now, however, the Crowes have returned to form with a wonderful release "Lions". It sounds different at first listen, than what you'd expect, but the Crowes' distinct style is very much audible. "Lions" takes a few listens to really get into, so don't be turned off on the first listen. You must give it a chance. I wasn't crazy about the album on the first listen, but loved it on the second. The songs flow into one another with true cohesion and the album manages to be inventive yet hard-rocking at the same time. Take the second track, Lickin' for example. It starts out with an odd guitar riff, but soon turns into a tasty hard rocker. Overall, Lions is a great album that demands several listens to really appreciate, as many truly great records do.
Free Music Review: Thanks Jimmy! Hit: 5 Stars
After the WORST Crowes album "By Your Side". "Lions" has given me a new confidence in the band. "By Your Side" was such an attempt studio sell-out piece of ... i was actually afraid to buy "Lions". I guess I can thank Jimmy Page for giving the band a kick in the butt to get back on track. "Lions" is brilliant! C.Robinson's voice has not sounded this great since 92's Masterpiece "Southern Harmony". And Grant it I have love every album The Crowes have put out, (except "By Your Side" like I said). "Lions" has now helped me forget "By Your Side" and relize that every band is entitled to 1 or 2 ... albums. Musically and lyrically "Lions" is another masterpiece. The producton on this album is also brilliant! "Lions" never lags it just gets better after every track. This is a great "rock album". Again, I want to thank Mr Page for his influence. I believe Jimmy helped the band remember what it was like to sound great again. If you are a REAL Black Crowes fan You gotta get this one. I look forward to the next album and Hope they can top "Lions".
