Free Music Review: Southern Harmony vs. Lions
Hit: 5 Stars

Lions is a revisit to the Southern Harmony era. The album kicks off with a great heroine-influenced balad...and progresses to the Descending-esque Lay It All on Me. It is an album that you can listen to countless times, and it is unlike the modern rock albums because you do not have to skip [through the same sounding] songs of other groups. This band has stuck to their instincts since Mr. Crowes Garden, even though they have occassionally changed styles. This is a must have album-plain and simple. To be a Crowes fan, much like the Grateful Dead, you fall in love with their performances than their albums-but this is a strong reason why the Crowes LIONS is such a spectacular-soul inspired album. This is the music of the people, of the inspired people that still believe that rock and roll is the great form of expression in music, even though the popular masses enjoy...16 year olds..., or...boy bands [singing] songs that some[body else]wrote trying to get people to jump up and down. This is rock and roll, and do not buy unless you believe that the rock and roll still lives, and that the Crowes are the greatest rock and roll band, besides the Stones.

Free Music Review: The brothers Robinson do it one last time...or is it???
Hit: 5 Stars

Lions is a fantastic rock and roll album considering the time period it came out. This is the Crowes at their musical best and the production is very raw and not too polished. And since it is the Crowes, their are no signs here of selling out or compromising their sound to sound like everyone else to make money.Once again, the Crowes show off their excellent musicianship and Chris howls and wails with so much emotion and energy.A great deal of variety is available on this album. You got your 70s style aerosmith/faces-like straight ahead rockers like "midnight","come on" and "lickin".skynyrd's southern swagger and zeppelin's acoustic wizardry in tracks like "cypress tree","soul singin","miracle to me","greasy grass",and "lay it all on me".even "young man old man blues" is a great funky track with an uplifting outro.

All in all, despite my comparisons of other bands to the crowes, these guys have their own sound and identity and are truly an amazing band which doesn't compromise for the critics. The Crowes were the last great rock n roll band and here's to hoping all these rumours of them reuniting are true.Great album.

Free Music Review: Heckle and Jeckle were Magpies this is the Black Crowes!
Hit: 5 Stars

You can't be a Black Crowes fan and have preconceptions about how one of their albums will sound. These guys sound so different from album to album. Call it growth as musicians, or whatever. "Shake your money maker" sounded nothing like "Southern Harmony...." and "By my side" sounds nothing like their new album "Lions".

Sure the Robinson Brothers and cohorts are still making great rock music when there are so few rock bands left. But this time with producer Don Was, the sound is so stripped down and clean. Much like Was did with the Rolling Stones on "Voodoo Lounge".

There is a new soulful twinge to many of the songs. I could amost hear Al Green doing one or two of these tracks.

Also with the CD you get access to sound archives of the bands tour, and can download one complete show. There is also the option to stream several shows to your computer and listen. That itself is worth the price of the disk. Some of us don;t live close to anywhere that the band is going to be this year, and The Crowes live is something that can't be missed.

Free Music Review: The Black Crowes groove album.....
Hit: 5 Stars

Lions is a grower, for sure. The first couple spins...eh. After letting it just play and not really focusing on it, it will sink in. As others have mentioned, they really didn't like it at first. One reviewer even changed their mind after a year or so. I think that is due to some of the minor chord songs, or Lions' initial disjointed feel, which subsides when you start to realize each song blends into one another.

One reviewer mentioned that Rich Robinson's guitar wasn't given enough attention on this album and that it was Chris's ego that was. I don't agree. These songs seem to be built off of the licks that Rich has created and the Crowes went from there.

I do believe that this album isn't for everyone. I also believe, if given some patience and time, this album will sink in and be very enjoyable.

The Crowes influences can be heard on Lions, as with most of their albums which isn't bad because they take those ideas and expand on them. Not just trying to be these influences, they celebrate them.

Lions' Grooves!

Free Music Review: WOW!! This album is a hardcore 70's esque rock GIANT!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is absolutely the best effort of the Crowes to date. Don Was produced this one beautifully. The influences, (artists and era's) on this album fly out at you. They range from the 60's psychedelic era (track 1-"Midnight from the Inside Out") to the blistering Jimmy Page guitar rock of the 70's, compliments of Rich Robinson, a truely underrated guitarist. The beatles are absolutely a huge influence here. A stange at first but great song is the 6th track "Ozone Mama". Also a wonderful surprise is the funk track "Young man, old man". Then they throw in ballad, "Miracle to Me" and a wonderfully flowing "Soul Singing". This is one of those-listen to every song albums. If you are waiting for an album to change the swing of music, this could be it (as long as radio doesn't get a hold of it, too much). A cool packaging is the inside fold out, shots of the band, hmmm I think we have seen those type shots before,--john, paul, george....

PICK THIS ONE UP WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!
