Free Music Notes for LionsFree Music Review: Fine return to form Hit: 5 Stars
The Crowes are back in fine form after the disappointing "By Your Side." You know it right away, the opening riffs demanding that you crank up your stereo immediately and not lower the volume until it's over. Further proof that no rock band in the world can kick off an album like the Crowes. The record's highlight is "Miracle to Me," an instant Crowes classic in every sense of the word. Compare this to the sappy "Diamond Ring" from the last record and you get an idea of how much these guys have progressed. If I have one complaint, it's that the production is just too bombastic... too loud. You're not going to find any moments like TSAOC's "How Much for Your Wings" or Amorica's "Descending" on this record, and that's a shame. Even the ballads seem overproduced and loud... by the time the record is over you don't feel refreshed, but exhausted. Not that that's a bad thing. Playing air guitar for an hour straight can take a lot out of you. Good job, boys!
Free Music Review: The Black Crowes: Last of the Real Rock and Roll Acts Hit: 5 Stars
The Black Crowes know how to make real rock and roll... Not the stuff that the MTV cartel cooks up to sell to the gullible kiddies, but real, good, old-fashioned Zep/Stones/Beatles we-will-make-the-music-cum-what-may tracks. You know... Rock and Roll! This diverse release plays well from front to back. It's raw and loose and beautiful and will have you all over the map. From an opener that recalls the classic Crowes blues-rock from albums past to toe-tapping, can't-stop-smiling tunes like Soul Singing and Ozone Mama to extended jam-and-reflect-on-life tracks like Miracle to Me and Lay It All On Me, every track on this album is pure sugar. If you play Exile on Main Street and Physical Graffiti from front to back and love every minute of them, then this disc is for you. If on the other hand you enjoyed "Kickin My Heart Around" and are looking for similar singles, you might want to look into earlier Crowes albums, especially "Shake Your Money Maker," because Lions just isn't a singles-oriented disc.
Free Music Review: Best Yet - That's A PROFESSIONAL Opinion Hit: 5 Stars
I can't believe of all the people who say that this record is a "disappointment", or "Not as good as (insert name of other album here)"...On the contrary, I believe that this record will be the savior of Rock-n-Roll! It is totally refreshing to see a genuine "musical opus" after lingering in the bad taste of the "Boy Bands" for a few years. This album is as original as it comes and a quality record that thrills track after track. From the opening raw energy of the intro to "Midnight..." to the soul of "Soul Singin" to the acoustic genius of "Miracle to Me" this album is a breath of fresh air and now the Black Crowes can rightfully take their place at the head of the line. They just keep getting better and better as the albums come. I wish other musical acts would follow their lead and get "back to basics" and just plain ol' BUTT KICKIN"!!! You shouldn't be dissappointed with this effort...It should be praised!
Free Music Review: Good ol' rock'n'roll with a twist. Hit: 5 Stars
Some of the things I've read concerning this album simply amaze me. Everything from giving a song-by-song "critique" to bashing the album because it doesn't sound like a previous one, both of which are completely worthless for actually giving the reader a good idea of what they should expect from this album. Why people feel the need for over-analyzation and endless comparisons I simply don't understand. This album is absolutely terrific. Its in-your-face, hard-hitting rock'n'roll at its finest - exactly what the Crowes have become known for. Yes, it is different than their previous albums, but that's one of the things that mark a great band, folks: The ability to continuously evolve, to not become stagnant, and to make better and better music. This album has the Crowes delving into all sorts of uncharted territory and pushes the envelope without losing the raw energy and characteristic sound they always display. If you like rock'n'roll (or music period, for that matter), buy this album.
Free Music Review: Riff Heaven Hit: 5 Stars
It is amazing that so many critics always hark back to a "classic" album when comparing a new one. The Stones curse was always trying to live up to Exile on Main Stree, which the critics hated when it first came out. Now the Crowes have the same problem with Southern Music...and Amorica (which the critics hated also). But hey this is Lions! And it is excellent! Of course their playing with Jimmy really influenced them and it shows. There are moments when the choruses sound like Three Snakes and One Charm...but the music is far more heavier and layered. The production is wonderful and really stays true to the Crowes sound. A great disc...some highlights. Midnight...Come on...Soul Singing- which is an incredibly uplifting song. Some critics say the there aren't enough leads from their new guitarist, however, Rich made it clear that he was stepping into a far more lead role than before and we should thank him for that! Welcome home to the nest!
