Free Music Notes for LionsFree Music Review: A Leap back and Two leaps forward. Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike "By your Side", which was easily digestible at first listen, "Lions" will take some time for you to appreciate. The band shows some maturity, maybe with the help of Don Was' production, who knows? I think that they are able to color outside of the lines with ease this time out (unlike past attempts). "Lions" feels like a mix of "Free" era Paul Rodgers and an old Curtis Mayfield record. Although "By your Side" was solid from cut to cut, I think that "Come On", "Greasy Grass River", "Soul Singing" and "Cypress Tree" from this CD are stronger than anything from their previous albums. There are some unpolished oddities this time out, but it all blends seamlessly from cut to cut. It kinda' invites you in to the party.
Free Music Review: Best since Amorica Hit: 5 Stars
"Lions" was largely recorded live in an empty theater with producer Don Was, and from the opening guitar wail of "Midnight from the Inside Out", you can hear the theater, and I love it. The Crowes rock through these tunes with gusto...with a newfound pure rock and roll spirit. Rich Robinson's guitar sounds MASSIVE on the rock numbers. The gentle songs ring true in the classic Black Crowes ballad style. It really comes across as a great return to the non-derivitive, blaring, raw delivery that made (makes) the Crowes so great. It's a wonderfully live sounding record, complete with an ambient room sound that only adds to the "live-ness" of the record. Not only is this a great development for the band, but it's also a great first BC album for the newcomer. Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Best since Amorica Hit: 5 Stars
The Black Crowes have definitely taken me by surprise. There is not a bad song on this disc. Even Amorica, which WAS probably my favorite disc by these guys has a couple of tracks on it that I don't usually listen to, but not this one. Lions is my new favorite. Though I like Three Snakes and One Charm and By Your Side quite a lot, I can't say that they sound a lot like what the Black Crowes started off doing. This is the last great Rock 'n' Roll band we're talking about here, and on Lions they have proved it. A definite return to form. If you like anything at all by the Crowes, you'll like this disc. It's getting compared to Zepelin a lot, but that's just because it's an easy comparison. These guys have a very unique sound that in some ways surpasses Zepelin in the songwriting department.
Free Music Review: They're doing some Rock N' Roll a$$ kickin' on this one! Hit: 5 Stars
Simply Amazing! Great stuff, they really pulled it off this time. The songs range from hard rockin' anthems to mellow rock ballads. In comparison to other crowes works, not as good at Southern Harmony (a all-time great) and better than Money Maker or Amorica. This one'll be in my CD player a long time. The best songs are Lickin', Ozone Mama, Greasy Grass River, Soul Singing, Cypress Tree, and Young Man Old Man. Hope they play a nice selection when I see them live at the end of this month. The Crowes are certainly one of the all-time best rock bands and the only one today that can fill the void of blues-laden classic style Rock N' Roll! If you like the Crowes, you'll love this album. If you don't, then you just don't know good music.
Free Music Review: The best thing they've ever done Hit: 5 Stars
Maybe I shouldn't be making such a bold statement, considering the fact that this is only the third Crowes CD in my collection, but from everything I've heard by these guys, this definitely stands at the top of the heap. The production (by Don Was) definitely plays a part. It's a loud, dense, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sound, and instead of distracting from the songs themselves, it enhances them. The baroque psychedelia intro to "Cosmic Friend" dives into a riff-heavy rocker. "Miracle to Me" and "Lay It All On Me" are the best ballads I've ever heard from these guys. "Soul Singing" is the Crowes at their funkiest. The whole thing is just one glorious mess of beautiful rock and roll.
