Free Music Review: Black Eyed Peas Are One of the Best In the Business!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Black Eyed Peas first made headlines with their classic "Where Is The Love" and released at least five singles from their previous album, "Elephunk". It was inevitable that they would release another album. Some may dissagree, but "Monkey Business" continues their success. This album is much different than "Elephunk" and is much more diverse. Despite the fact that nearly every song is derived from another song, that proves not to be a bad thing at all. Every single song is different, which makes this album an adventure. Nearly every song is enjoyable - a sign of a great album. The Black Eyed Peas also know how to make nice raps. Even though some of their songs are a tad innapropriate, compared to their previous works - take "My Humps" and "Disco Club" for example - that is not a reason to bypass this album. Trust me, this is one awesomely enjoyable album.

1. Pump It (3:33) B+
Awesome surfer song, lifting music from "Misirlou". It starts off the album to a bangin' start. This will probably be turned into a single.
2. Don't Phunk With My Heart (3:59) B
At first, I hated this song thinking "what are the BEPs doing? They used to be good!" Of course, I changed my mind about this song after a few listens. It's not anything compared to their previous singles, but its Asian instruments add much variety. Nice sound effects also. I have grown to like this song a lot more.
3. My Style -featuring Justin Timberlake- (4:28) B+
JT returns for a very JT-styled song (especially in the "Whassup with you girl" part). Not half as good as "Where Is The Love?" but still pretty good. I personally hate Justin Timerlake's music, so the fact that he doesn't have a solo or basically any part of this song does not bother me, but any JT fan will be hoping for more. Except on the chorus, JT has almost no connection with the song. Pretty good song, but dissapointing to JT fans.
4. Don't Lie (3:39) A
Nice guitar and happy feel to the song makes "Don't Lie" a true winner. Kind of like "Shut Up" only much less angrier. Awesome song; one of the best on the album.
5. My Humps (5:27) A-
Catchy. VERY catchy. This is the next "Milkshake" for sure, and nothing like the BEPs. Fergie gets dirty in this song. Let's just say the allegorical meaning to this title is not very subtle. At all. Very good song, though - nice music and again, this is really catchy.
6. Like That -featuring Qtip, Talib Kweli, Cee-Lo & John Legend- (4:34) B_
Doesn't really stand out for me, but pretty good. Good chorus and cameos of a lot of well-known artists.
7. Dum Diddly -featuring Dante Santiago- (4:19) A-
Definitely going to become a single. This is a remake of Musical Youth's reggae hit "Pass the Dutchie" - as seen in the chorus. Very catchy and definitely the new BEP Party Song.
8. Feel It (4:19) A-
Fergie has a lot of awesome vocal parts- especially in the intro. This is another awesomely catchy song with nice music. The BEPs are really making great hits on this album.
9. Gone Going -featuring Jack Johnson- (3:13) A
A Will.i.am solo song; nice. Jack Johnson sings the extremely catchy chorus. Awesome stuff here. Nice to chill out to.
10. They Don't Want Music -featuring James Brown- (6:46) B+
James Brown on a Black Eyed Peas album? Now you know the BEPs are taking a change for the better. Nice song, even though it is nearly seven minutes long. Again, catchy. Nice stuff.
11. Disco Club (3:48) B+
Really innapropriate for the BEPs but good. Again, catchy chorus (we have a lot of catchy songs here). Nice song with good music.
12. Bebot (3:30) B-
The worst song on the album, and not because it is in Tagalog (Fillapino). While "The Apl Song" was catchy and meaningful, "Bebot" unfortunately isn't. I like the idea of a song in Tagalog, but Apl.de.ap can do better, and we've seen that on "The Apl Song".
13. Ba Bump (3:56) B+
Ba bump your bump! Again, more unbelievable catchiness with club themes. That music is infectious is too.
14. Audio Delite at Low Fidelity (5:29) B+
More awesome stuff here. Nice chillout song with great music.
15. Union -featuring Sting- (5:04) A+
The best song on the album. This is the "Where Is the Love?" of "Monkey Business". Of course, it isn't that good, but it talks about similar topics, now featuring Sting. He is an awesome addition to the song. Catchy chorus (love that Fergie part), and the music is great. Awesome way to end an awesome album.

Overall, "Monkey Business" gets a B+/A-. Tons of catchy, fun songs with variety makes this an awesome album to listen to. Nearly every song is likable, and while the singles are not as good as those on "Elephunk", the Black Eyed Peas is an amazing band who know how to produce awesome music. Bottom line: BUY IT.

Monkey Business (Dig) Poster

As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business?s high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake?s contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake?s BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man?s "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don?t Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band?s fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don?t Phunk With My Heart," Fergie?s melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible ?hip-pop? CD. --Denise Sheppard
