If you are like me, you might have heard of the Black Keys in connection with the White Stripes. It seems that a lot of people like to throw around a comparison between the Stripes and the Black Keys. This is a comparison that the members of the Black Keys themselves get a bit frustrated with. The Black Keys are another two piece band just like the Stripes but other than that and some of the guitar riffs that are found on the album. it is pretty hard to draw a comparison. The latest release from the Black Keys "Rubber Factory", still has a hint of White Stripes mixed in and in particular in the guitar on a couple of tracks. But instead it invokes more of an old school 60's and 70's type sound more than it ever does the White Stripes. I consider this to be a modern day throwback album. A 2004 blues album, with a bit of garage rock mixed in there as well.

If you take John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix, The Whitestripes, and even a bit of Tom Wilson from Junkhouse and throw all of their styles and voices in a big ol' pot over a fire, and let that stew for a while. What you get is the Black Keys. Its a medley of different genres, combined into one awesome package. Speaking of packages, the way the album itself is packed is pretty cool. The whole concept plays off the title "Rubber Factory", and the liner notes are done up like each page is a different shift the band worked. Equipped with a punch in and punch out time. The only problem with it, is it makes a bit difficult to find the lyrics. This album is filled with grimy vocals, and grungey guitars, with powerful drums. And this is a sound that is unique to the Black Keys, I'd be hard pressed to think of anyone else current doing anything like it.

There are not any bad songs whatsoever on this album. 13 songs, and 13 quality songs. Ya a couple aren't quite as good as the others, but I am not about to call the misses just for the sake of sticking to my regular format. And yes I repeat this again and again, BUT what seperates a wicked album, from an ok album with good songs. Is an album without filler. This album with 13 songs all of which are good or tremendous, might just very well make a lot of people's tops for 2004 lists. I know as of right now its trending to be on mine. Its inspired me to dip further back into the Black Keys catalogue. So i advise very highly to check out the Black Keys. If you like your blues infused with garage rock, or if you like your garage rock without the lame mainstream qualities that some of the newer garage rock bands.... (I'm looking in your direction Jet) then the Black Keys are the band for you. "Rubber Factory" will not disappoint.

Songs I can recommend:"10 AM Automatic", "Just Couldn't Tie Me Down", :"Girl is on my Mind", "The Lengths", "Keep Me", "Till I Get Away".

Score out of 10: 9.0

The third low-tech, high-impact recording from the Akron, Ohio, duo is once again a loud and lively confirmation that passion, not precision, is what the blues is all about. With Dan Auerbach's insistent, abrasive guitar tone and drummer Patrick Carney's violent percussion workouts, the Black Keys' sound thrashes about with industrial-strength garage-band energy, but it also connects directly to the core sensibilities of the original blues creators with its primal expressions of pain and pride. With Auerbach shouting out the vocals the duo rocks hard in its stripped-down, ragged glory mode on Hendrix-influenced shredders like "10 A.M. Automatic" and "The Desperate Man," the fuzzed-out "Till I Get My Way," and the surprisingly swinging "Just Couldn't Tie Me Down." But it also delivers the same emotional intensity in a less frantic form on the moody mini-masterpiece "The Lengths." And, for all the justifiable fascination with the out-of-control excitement of the duo's punkish instrumental approach, the group continues to excel at songcraft, a talent expressed both in its own material and in its ability to recognize and expand the disguised merits of lesser-known cover songs. It follows a previous Beatles rarity recording with a nod to the Kinks this time via a personalized cover of "Act Nice and Gentle," probably the last thing the Black Keys would ever be accused of being. --Michael Point
