Free Music Review: Solid, but not quite stellar

[...]Black Knight, a Gothic Metal band from Vancouver, Canada formed in 1981. They struggled through line-up changes (planned and unplanned), pop music producers who wanted to change their sound, and record company indifference. They released a "legendary" self-financed EP in 1985 and faded into obscurity...until now.

Tracks 1-5 comprised the original 1985 "Master Of Disaster" EP. Tracks 6-8 were recorded about six months earlier. All these tracks feature their second, female, vocalist which made Black Knight something of a rarity back in the early eighties. Tracks 9-11 (and the video) are even earlier recordings made with their original, male, vocalist. The final track, the appropriately titled ballad "One More Night", was recorded in 2005 and reunites most of the band's classic line-up.
Highlights of this disc include the ultra-heavy "Aaraigathor", featuring their bassist on lead vocals, and the EP title track, "Master Of Disaster". You can hear a sound clip of the latter song at the following URL:

By the way, "Master Of Disaster II" is not a sequel song, but an earlier recording of the same song. By comparing the two versions, you can tell the band made the right decision when they replaced their original singer. But I still like the early tracks, especially their melodic theme song "Black Knight".
There's not a bad song on the entire CD, although the final ballad sounds like it would be more at home on an old Heart album than on the original "Master Of Disaster" EP.

It's a shame that the recording industry passed on Black Knight and they never got a chance to further develop their sound. The band definitely had talent and potential.
I'm rating this item 4/5, partly because some of the songs aren't that memorable, but mostly because this CD is rather pricey. Even so, I'm glad I bought it and want to thank Cult Metal Classics for "unearthing this time capsule".
