Free Music Review: Excellent work by a very special talent

There is a considerable controversy going on right now in the metal world over Zakk's status within that world. The camps are equally divided between those who don't consider him metal at all, but rather a hard rock artist, and those who consider him one of the greatest, if not the greatest living rock guitarists today. I'm in the latter camp.
There is a video avalable on the Internet of Zakk and BLS doing his tribute to Dimebag Darrell 'In This River' from the fantastic DVD just released called Doom Troopin'. The performance is jaw dropping amazing.....and clearly places Zakk in the same category as rock legends Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and others. It is an absolutely mind blowing performance. The man hasn't been proclaimed 'Guitar Player of the Year' three times in a row for no reason. The man is an incredible talent.
Now on to this album. The first thing you realize about Shot to Hell, besides the awful cover art, is that its an amazingly diverse work. Rock solid rockers like Concrete Jungle and true head bangers like Faith is Blind are interspersed with some of Zakk's best ever ballads like The last Goodbye and the absolute best song on the album, Blood is Thicker Than Water. While Concrete Jungle is a great song I think Blood is Thicker Than Water is the cut that should have been the first single. It has amzing crossover potential and is a fantastic song.
For the cookie monster crowd hoping to hear guttural screaming by some adolescent trying to sound bad..they will be dissapointed. Zakk doesn't have to pretend anything. As he says 'This is not an act'. This is an adult album for adults.
The Black Label Society's upcoming Black on Black tour with Black Stone Cherry promises to be one of the best concerts of the year. I highly recommend both this album as well as the Doom Troopin DVD.

Make no mistake, Zakk Wylde remains one of the most invigorating guitar players in rock & roll today. On Shot to Hell, he continues his fascination with the Alice in Chains-esque grunge that he and the rest of BLS whipped up for 2005's Mafia. As convincing as Wylde's riffing can be on tunes such as "Concrete Jungle," "Blacked Out World" (a track that imagines a darker version of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion"), and "Faith Is Blind," you can't help but get the feeling you've heard this before--whether on previous Black Label outings or on the records that Wylde has made with Ozzy Osbourne. The slow-build ballad "New Religion" and its stylistic cousin "Sick of It All" suggest that Wylde may be wise to put a little more distance between albums and try to focus on making the all-killer, no-filler album he so clearly has inside of him. --Jedd Beaudoin
