Free Music Review: A Brilliant Debut!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to say I loved this album from the very first moments I heard the opening track proper.Okay it starts off with a 50 second strumming up of guitars-but once the sound takes off you're blown away.Acoustic guitar leads into the heaviest of bass drum beats, then the strong and deep bass kicks in and to complete the sound of very heavy fuzzed up guitars give the sound a lot more beef.I haven't heard this sound since the great albums by Jesus And Mary Chain and of course My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' album, though I would have to say it's a bit more melodic then that c.d.The vocal's are shared between Peter Hayes and Robert Turner,in fact they seem to take turns in most things bar the drumming which is done by the 3rd member of the band Nick Jago. There are so many good tracks on this c.d.,that it's hard to isolate any one in particular-the only track I'm not sure about is the closing track. On that track the lyrics are not what you'd expect from a band of this sort and I'm not sure if they're just being ironic? All of the tracks have a pulsating drum-beat behind them. The guitars are really heavy at times. You get plenty of feedback and distortion. But they are more full bodied then being just a mere guitar band as on some tracks like the phenomenal track 5 "White Palms" the whole song is driven by the bass. The sound is like something we haven't heard in a long time.

Some of the songs have plenty of swagger about them. They are a pretty confrontational band with plenty of attitude. This attitude isn't illustrated by use of "shock" tactic lyrics that we here lots of now.The attitude is totally musically based.Songs like the 3rd track,"Whatever Happened To My Rock And Roll" almost has an Oasis sound to it-but this would be from their best "Definitely Maybe" period.Track 9 seem to borrow a riff from Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" before it gets swallowed in a cacophany of guitars, bass and those drums.Track4 has guitars that intially give it a sort of gothic sound-before the noisy chorus.Track 5 is just the best song I've heard in years-if there's a better one this year I'll be dying to hear it!Track 7 starts off with 2 minutes of a strange vocal chant, before it leads into the most Jesus And Mary Chain track you'll hear.Guitar riffs go off into strange places before we reach a more conventional sound for the chorus. The next track is the only slow track on the c.d. and at times between vocals and guitar sound it could have been a raw out-take from Jeff Buckley's "Grace" c.d.

Right now American bands are bringing out the best indie rock c.d.'s.The future looks a lot brighter with The Strokes,The White Stripes and now B.R.M.C.What makes it even more interesting is that each band has it's own very distinct sound.Hopefully these sounds will help get rid of the phoney Nu-Metal sound.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Poster

Japanese edition of the U.S. indie rock act's 2000 album includes three bonus tracks, 'Screaming Gun' & 'At My Door' & 'Down Here'.
It would be easy to dismiss B.R.M.C. as another bunch of Britpop wannabes. Their amalgam of fuzzed-out vocals and chugging guitars over layers of droning feedback immediately brings to mind the Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream. But the band's wanton attitude easily compensates for its lack of originality. Plucking its name from the Marlon Brando classic The Wild One and digging deep into its weathered copy of Psycho Candy for lyrical inspiration, the leather-clad San Francisco trio picks up where Oasis left off--pillaging the past, regurgitating it shamelessly, and making it sound exciting and dangerous in the process. Imagine the sheer audacity that goes into writing a song like "Whatever Happened to My Rock & Roll (Punk Song)"--all Stooges agitation and Beach Boys melodies--and backing it with a blissful Stone Roses homage called "Awake." They're not the best at what they do, but right now they're all we've got. --Jaan Uhelski
