Free Music Review: The Last Great Sabbath Album

Whatever curious synergy the band had possessed throughout their turbulent history climaxed finally in this truly terrific work. The original Sabbath line-up released a further two albums after this - "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die" - both of which, although good in parts, suffered from the decision amongst certain members of the band to tone down the luscious "heaviosity" of their sound to try and garner a more positive reception amongst the music press and their fan base. A decision that most would concede now as being mistaken. In terms of musical content and overall sound, there isn't such a great leap between their previous album ("Sabbath Bloody Sabbath") and this one as there had been between their other previous releases. The sound is dense without being foggy and the instrumentation as sophisticated as it ever got with this band. There are great songs on this album: "Hole in the Sky" and "Symptom of the Universe" are fast-paced, waking-up-your-neighbours affairs, "The Writ" and "Megalomania" great staggering monstrosities that are as frightening as they are exhilarating. There's so much passion on this record - it's almost as if the band knew that this would be their last moment of brilliance together before the arguing and recriminations took over completely and the band fragmented acrimoniously. Fantastic effort, this - worth every one of the five stars I award it... and more.
